After the success it had more than two decades ago Harry Potter, dozens of stories that sought to replicate that popularity reached the cinema and few have been those that have managed to get a space in the complicated and competitive world of magical literary sagas in the cinema, however, the studios continue betting on bringing these stories, so it takes them years to build the projects. That has been the case for The school of good and evil.
came this October 19 to the platform Netflixa place that was not the place where lovers of this type of story would originally see it, since it was planned to be a summer blockbuster that will be released in the cinema, on the big screen, but after several setbacks it reached the streaming system.
The film is based on the series of six fantasy books by Soman Chainani and The School for Good and Evil is the first book in Chainani’s series, which was published in 2013. The book has sold more than 2.5 million copies and has been translated into 30 languages on six continents. Chainani was hired to serve as executive producer and was consulted on the adaptation.
In this new world, good and evil, heroes and villains, have an eternal struggle, one similar to the one that this project had to overcome to see the light, since although it has all the elements that the public may like (magic, action, love, and great fights), took more than ten years to develop, first in 2013 Roth Films associated with Jane Startz to acquire the rights to produce the film and Universal Pictures won the rights to the book, though there wasn’t much progress after that, in part due to the pandemic, until Netflix stepped in and took over the book series into a feature film.
After Netflix bought the film rights from Universal Pictures, they hired David Magee Y Laura Solon as screenwriters in 2017. Fiona Weisswho has experience with popular fantasy movies like Harry Potter, The Golden Compass Y Fantastic beasts and where to find them was the casting director. The film was filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and completed production in July 2021.
In charge of the project was Paul Feigwho has been in charge of feature films such as bridesmaids, Spy, in simple favor and the new version of Ghostbusters . It features a cast headed (in addition to Theron and Washington) by Sophia Anne Caruso, best known for her role as Lydia Ella in the Broadway musical beetlejuicewho here is Sophie and Sofia Wylie (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) plays Agatha. Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) is the narrator, Michelle Yeoh plays Professor Emma Anemone and Laurence Fishburne to the school principal.
Is there someone totally good or bad? Can a person who has had negative actions suddenly be someone good? And whoever has done good things can suddenly do something negative? Those are some of the questions raised by the new Netflix movie, in which, very much in the style of Harry Potter, the thesis is raised that no one is totally good and neither is it bad.
The feature film finally arrived having Charlize Theron Y Kerry Washington as two of its main stars in this project that follows the lives of two young friends (Sophie and Agatha), who are taken to a school that trains students to be either villains or heroes. Although this pair of teenagers couldn’t be more different, one has a dark and creepy personality while the other dreams of being a fairy tale princess.
Sophie is the quintessential pretty, fun-loving, pink-wearing bride, and though she dreams of leaving her town to join the likes of Cinderella Y Snow White, Agatha does not like many people, she lives in the village cemetery with her mother, who is also the village witch. Unlike Sophie, Agatha is basically a social outcast, despite these differences, they are best friends with her.
In their small town, they realize that strange disappearances occur on a certain day each year and suspect that the two children who disappear each year are stolen by a school that takes them to two castles, one for good and one for evil. . Sophie begins to fantasize about being taken away to learn how to become a princess, while Agatha is not openly interested and would prefer her and her friend to be left alone.
She knows that if such a demise ever occurs, she is destined to be a witch. When the inevitable happens and both girls are swept up, there is a mix-up that changes their lives forever. It won’t be a surprise to find out that both characters realize there’s no such thing as all-right or all-wrong over the course of the movie, and sure enough, the first movie also ends with a sneak peek at a sequel.
