The shocking change of “John Connor”: Actor of “Terminator 2″ left drugs and even has new teeth |

Edward Furlong rose to fame at the age of 14, playing John Connor in “Terminator 2″ (1991). Although this character made him popular with viewers, having to deal with success at such a young age almost ruined his life.

He became addicted to heroin and methamphetamines, which led to numerous problems with the law: the last arrest was in 2016, when he was convicted of possession of narcotics. In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, the 44-year-old actor revealed that he has been sober for four years and is grateful to be able to resume his job.

Although he never really left, his career has suffered intermittence due to the spiral of addictions and arrests that he faced since his adolescence. After a long break that began in 2013, Furlong returned to the origins as part of “Terminator: hidden destiny” (2019). “It’s good to have a second chance,” the actor declared.

In this sense, he referred to what it was like to become famous at just 14 years old: “Everything was a shock. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to fully accept it. Chosen out of nowhere, I just auditioned and before I knew it I was doing it. I was in a movie.”

Furlong was far from experiencing his film debut as something fascinating. Rather the opposite: “I remember the first day (of filming) as if it were yesterday. Waking up at 4am and hating life. Go to the set and see hundreds of people doing different jobs. There’s a lot going on and you learn pretty quickly that (shooting a movie) is really boring.”

Although he acknowledges that he experienced incredible things, he also believes that he paid the price. “When I was a kid, I didn’t have too many people taking care of me and they let me live wildly. I didn’t know how to manage my money. If I had been older, I wouldn’t have made so many bad decisions,” he assures.

As he relates, first it was alcohol, marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms. At 20, he was already using cocaine and heroin, one to stay awake and the other to help him sleep. Getting high, he says, made him feel like he “fit in.”

In 2006, Furlong married actress Rachael Bella and that same year they had a son. She filed for divorce in 2009, but a new scandal would soon follow. In 2012, his 6-year-old son tested positive for cocaine after visiting him. The encounters between the actor and the child became supervised.

By 2013, “John Connor” was sentenced to 180 days in jail for assaulting his girlfriend at the time. He was imprisoned and in rehabilitation, but returned to use. He was desperate to kick his addictions, but he couldn’t.

In 2019, already recovered from his addictions.

Everything changed in 2016. After spending a full year in rehab, his life changed. “My son and I have a wonderful relationship. I like how simple my life is now. I can get up every morning and not worry that I will end up in prison.” Furlong considers that getting off drugs was the most important thing he has ever done in his life.

His new reality also came hand in hand with changes in his appearance. His teeth had rotted due to drug use, so he had new teeth made, as part of his transformation:

“It sounds strange to me to talk about teeth because my life is not about how I look, but every time I looked in the mirror, I was discouraged, as a reminder of what I had done all those years,” he confessed.

Edward Furlong currently has three films ahead of him, in different stages of production, and with the promise of being his definitive return to acting.
