Before the world discovered her as the new black widow in the Marvel universe, Florence Pugh managed to earn the respect of critics and the love of fans for a 2019 independent film titled midsummer. The horror feature film was the second work by Ari Aster, after his popular The Devil’s Legacy (2018) and managed to surprise moviegoers and has quickly become a cult film. In 1862, after the Great Famine, a nurse named Lib Wright (pugh) crosses England to reach a remote Irish community, after being called to observe Anna O’Donnell, a girl who hasn’t eaten a single meal since her eleventh birthday four months ago. The film is an adaptation made by the Argentine Sebastián Lelio, who was based on the novel by Emma Donoghue titled The Wonder. The protagonist’s discomfort deepens when she finds out that a nun has also been summoned to deal with the same case. When she meets her employers, she is informed of the peculiar task. The nurse and the nun will watch over the girl. They will do it in eight-hour shifts to find out what is happening to the little girl. Along the way they will question if what they are facing is a sacred and divine act, a new scientific frontier where nutrients can be obtained without food, or is there something more complicated at stake?

Lib watches over Anna during the day, while the nun takes charge at night. Together they are asked to observe the phenomenon, which has become a mystery to everyone, including the intriguing caretakers. The nurse will initially seek to show that everyone is being part of a hoax, but as the days go by, she will begin to doubt and wonder if what she is contemplating is part of a miracle.

In a recent interview, Lelio explained that the film “deals with anecdotes. What we believe to be true, the stories we tell ourselves to survive, and the conflict between science and miracles.” For the filmmaker, The Prodigy it’s a grim film and provides the perfect backdrop for Florence Pugh to shine.
