The most brutal and excessive action movie of the year is a Korean-style ‘Crank’, it’s on Netflix and it’s pure adrenaline

As soon as you consume oriental action cinema of any kind, you will know well that it often works almost as an aesthetic and conceptual enema against American productions, corseted, stiff and shot and edited with the same plan. Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Indian (among other nationalities) action movies fly so freely that it’s dizzying, and this ‘Sump‘ that you can watch on netflix is a perfect proof of it.

In fact, in its approach (and, above all, in its crazy rhythm) it is partly reminiscent of those two masterpieces that were ‘Crank’ and its sequel, perhaps two of the last great Western action films before the arrival of the roller marvelita. A pseudo-countdown, an infinite high-speed chase and here’s an extra: a camera in perpetual (although obviously tricked out) sequence shotwhich offers a view of the action without cuts.

In that sense, ‘Carter’ is reminiscent of another recent monument to screen action, ‘Hardcore Henry’, although this one is, if possible, more ambitious and crazy. It all starts when we meet a man who wakes up without remembering anything. Guided by a female voice giving him directions from an earpiece, he embarks on a mission in which he will have to forcibly rescue a hostage and prevent the spread of a terrible mutant virus that is already wreaking havoc.

Not recommended for friends of dry action and at ground level, ‘Carter’ is all acrobatics and madness: gore in abundance, superb choreography, filmed chases that are glory at two hundred per hour (The director of the film, Byung-gil Jung, is also the director of another film that distilled excellent action on wheels, ‘The villainess’) and, possibly, the best insane skydiving sequence you’ve ever seen. Long live Korea.
