No less than 24 Emmy nominations this year has accumulated ‘The Last of Us’, in a milestone that places it almost on a par with the acclaimed ‘Succession’, with 27 nominations. However, there is a difference: ‘The Last of us’ is a new series, still in its first season, while the overwhelming nominations for ‘Succession’ are due to the farewell to the series about the misadventures of the Roy family, which has just closed its last season. In any case, it’s an unequivocal triumph for HBO (which also has garnered 23 nominations for ‘The White Lotus’).
We are in a difficult year, with the actors’ strike looming over the industry (at the time of writing these lines there has not yet been a vote on whether to start the strike, but seems imminent, could doubt that the gala will finally be held on September 18). In any case, the rest of the nominations have given shine to series like ‘Ted Lasso’ (21), ‘Dahmer’ (13), or ‘Wednesday’ (12), among others. Although ‘Star Wars’ series like ‘Andor’ or ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ have received their corresponding share of nominations, riskier bets like ‘Separation’ have not been so lucky.
What the 24 nominations for ‘The Last of Us’ have achieved (among which are Best Drama Series, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as main performers, seven nominations for actors and actresses invited and a good number of technical awards) is touching a record that remained unbroken since 1993, the most nominations in a new seriesto. At the moment, the podium continues to be occupied by a production from that year, ‘New York Police Officers’, with 30 nominations, but ‘The Last of Us’ is in second place.
In this way, ‘The Last of Us’ is confirmed as one of the great recent productions of the fantastic genre. It far surpasses the much more publicized ‘House of the Dragon’ (9) and ‘The Rings of Power’ (6) and ushers in a decidedly new age of triumph for video game adaptations.
