The actor Zack Efron stars in “The Greatest Beer Run Ever”, a film produced by Apple TV+ in which he plays John “Chickie” Donohue, a young American with a complex mission: to bring beer to his compatriots who served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

The trailer for this film inspired by real events was published this Wednesday and its release date is set for next September 30, when it will hit theaters and Apple’s video on demand service.

Tired of demonstrations against sending US troops to the Vietnam War (1955-1975) that, in his opinion, do not provide solutions, the young “Chickie”, 26, decides to take on a task that really makes his friends happy. neighborhood friends now in the front.

Thus, in 1968 the idea arose of providing beer to soldiers stationed in Vietnam, a war conflict that, in the context of the Cold War, caused great social rejection in the US and that this country, moreover, lost.

On her mission, “Chickie” will enlist the help of Arthur Coates (played by Russel Crowe), a war photographer documenting the horrors of the conflict in Vietnam.

And it is that as “Chickie” enters the battlefield, he is noticing the ravages caused by the war, making the film go from a tape with comic overtones to a production with great awareness of the pain suffered by the soldiers and their families then.

While continuing with his slogan of bringing beer to his compatriots, the images of coffins of young recruits hit “Chickie” and make him realize that neither side is entirely good, to end up striving to show the soldiers that their relatives love them. and still waiting for them at home.

The plot is based on the bestseller “The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty, and War”, a book published by Donohue himself with JT Molloy, a reporter for media such as the New York Post, in 2017 .

In addition to Zac Efron and Russell Crowe, the cast includes Jacke Picking, Will Ropp, Archie Renaux, Kyle Allen, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis and Bill Murray.
