“The girl from the Vatican”, the docuseries about a scandal that shook the Holy See

Real cases are all the rage on Netflix. the vatican girl (Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela OrlandiGreat Britain/Italy, 2022) is the new docuseries that follows in the footsteps of a resounding mystery that has been forgotten by many over the years.

The intrigue begins in 1983. After leaving a music class, a fifteen-year-old girl named Emmanuela Orlandi disappears without a trace. As it was the daughter of an employee who worked in Vatican City, Ercole Orlandi, an official of the Prefecture of the Papal Household, this disappearance quickly became an unprecedented and disturbing mystery within the Vatican. Later the disappearance was considered a kidnapping, but the passage of time only obscured the motives and the possible ramifications of the case.

As is often the case with Netflix series based on true crimes, the search for suspense is often at odds with the ethics of the documentary. There are not a few narrative traps and dubious resources that are displayed in the four episodes, but in any case the subject matter is so intriguing that it is difficult to give up completing the almost four hours of this documentary. Even more so when characters like John Paul II himself are involved, who personally publicly asked for Emanuela Orlandi.

Also appears the Pope Francisco briefly but significantly, opening one more door in this mystery that involves the mafia, the KGB, the cold war and even the man who tried to assassinate the Pope in 1981. The testimonies of his family are moving and the questions multiply, the gigantic mystery that seems distant in time happened forty years ago, but the lack of transparency of the Church only raises suspicions.
