The End of Evangelion movie celebrates its 25th anniversary — Kudasai

On July 19, 2022 in Japan it will be twenty-five years since the premiere of the feature film The End of Evangelion. This film is an alternate version of the original series finale. Neon Genesis Evangelionwhich can supplement or replace the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth episodes, depending on how you look at them.

The film is divided into two approximately 45-minute episodes, each of which is given an English subtitle by Gainaxjust like the original series episodes: Episode 25′: Air Y Episode 26′: Sincerely Yours. They are considered by the producers to be either an alternate ending to the television series, or a more detailed, “real-world” retelling of the original series ending in episodes 25 and 26, taking place almost entirely in the minds of the characters. principals (style is largely determined by time and budget constraints).

Production on a cinematic finale for the series began in 1997, with Gainax premiering Death and Rebirth. The first part, Death, was a highly condensed recap and remake of the television series. The second part, Rebirth, was originally intended to be the complete ending, but could not be finished (due to budget and time constraints). The project was completed by the end of the year and published as The End of Evangelion.

The “Episode 25′: Air“, uses the original script intended for the 25th episode of the original series and forms approximately two-thirds of the previous film, reborn. The End of Evangelion later became the second part of Revival of Evangeliona concatenation of Death(true)² Y The End of Evangelion.

The ambiguous and unclear meaning of the ending of the TV series left many viewers and critics confused and dissatisfied. The last two episodes were arguably the most controversial segments in an already controversial series and were received as flawed and incomplete by many. Nevertheless, Hideaki Anno and assistant director Kazuya Tsurumaki they defended the artistic integrity of the ending.

It is a common belief that Hideaki Anno I think The End of Evangelion as a form of revenge against fans of Neon Genesis Evangelion unhappy with the existing ending of the television series. In fact, The End of Evangelion it is closer to the original concept of the series finale, which was changed for budget and censorship issues. It is also a common belief that the “death threats” that appear on the screen in The End of Evangelion were for the end of the television series, when in reality, the death threats shown on screen at least, were in relation to the end of Evangelion Death And Rebirth. Most of these “death threats” were, in fact, letters of praise and encouragement.

Only two can truly be considered “death threats,” while only one can truly be considered “hate mail.” In an interview on the Tokyo International Film Festival, Anno revealed that there were legal reasons preventing them from actually using the fan mail, so the mail was actually written by the staff. The “hate mail” letters were written by an old friend of Anno’s.
