If someone begins to see carelessly Last night may not fully capture the tone and intentions of the film. At first it seems like just another movie about Christmas gatherings, although something sinister hovers over the plot. But detail more, detail less, everything moves within the rules of the Christmas family drama.
This meeting, however, begins to multiply their clues to indicate that something is not right. He keeps the plot going while the viewer has to accommodate his ideas and prepare for what’s to come. The marriage formed by Nell (Keira Knightley) and Simon (Matthew Goode) are the ones who have organized this Christmas dinner on their farm for their old school friends and their spouses. They are all dressed very formally for what looks like an event with friends. Nell and Simon’s son Art (Roman Griffin Davis) is one of the boys present. The tension grows until the truth comes to light. The original title of the film is silent night but in Spanish they have opted for one that advances things of the plot. Yes, it’s Last night.
The story plays with black humor at first but it becomes more and more dramatic. Even more so when among the participants there are children who face the same fate as their parents. This mixture of family Christmas film and apocalyptic story gradually manages to generate claustrophobia and regardless of the tricks of the genre, the film manages to convey a deep anguish. The drama takes over everything and is pure conflict, a permanent moral dilemma for each and every one of the characters.}
It is not easy to define if that intensity is a virtue or a defect. Its somewhat cruel gravity does not finish completely closing with respect to the beginning something lighter and ambiguous. The harshness of the story was harder to digest with humor than without. The three protagonists who detach themselves from the choral cast also produce instant empathy. Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode and the boy Roman Griffin Davis (famous for his starring role in JojoRabbit) are the piece that generates that extra commitment. Last night it may not resolve its issues so well, but it confronts viewers with conflicts that do not leave them indifferent.
