During the Golden Age of Mexican cinema there were many romances that went beyond the big screen and became a reality. Some ended in marriage, others in passionate courtships and a few died in abrupt or peculiar ways.
The truth is that not many were aware of one of the loves he had Pedro Armendariz, one of the great icons of ranch comedy and drama. It was about Esther Fernandez, considered the actress with one of the most beautiful faces in Mexican cinema and the first great star of the Golden Age.
Esther rose to fame thanks to her participation in There in the big ranch, the first Mexican film that was well received by international audiences and by which all the phenomenon that was marked in history would begin.
Although this film by Fernando de Fuentes was from 1936, the truth is that Esther began her artistic career in 1933, even having a performance in The woman of the port, film that addressed the issue of incest. However, after There in the big ranch, the offers would come in piles to the Jalisco.
It was in 1937 that he was able to shoot three films in total, which was common among artists of the time. The peculiar thing about this year was that met Pedro Armendariz. Their first meeting occurred during the recording of Candidate me.
According to Esther’s statements, it was thanks to this film that cHe began a brief affair with the actor. They discussed each other, chemistry emerged, and they decided to be dating. Shortly after they finished making Candidate me, they started making another tape together: The adelita.
They were in Tlaxcala. According to the actress, the filming was mainly in this state and at night. The courtship between the actors was not bad at all, but Esther implied that she was not taking him so seriously for one reason: Pedro’s explosive personality.
“I was afraid of him”he stated for a documentary. “He had a very strong character and he fought with everyone. Oh my GOD. I said ‘No, this one day he slaps me or half kills me. Nerd!'”. The problem was that, unlike Fernández, Armendariz was taking the future of their relationship very seriously.
One day, while they were both in a pool resting in the sun, Pedro approached the actress and abruptly told her “Hey, Estefana. Let’s get married, you and me “. She, who did not take his sudden proposal seriously, replied “Oh yeah. How not? Let’s get married ”.
Pedro’s next reaction was to get up, go back to your room, change your clothes, get ready, and ask the director of The adelita, Gabriel Figueroa, and Esther’s aunt to go to court. Then he went back to Fernández and ordered him to get ready to leave.
The actress admitted that still for this moment he thought it was a joke, so he went along with it. He dressed, returned with Armendariz and they left in the direction of said court. Esther commented that when they arrived, He found the entire company that they brought in for the filming.
This was proof enough for the interpreter to stop believing it was a game. Puzzled and a little scared, she asked Pedro if they were seriously getting married. The actor, with the same frankness with which he proposed to her, replied that yes, that they were there to be husband and wife.
It was at that moment that Esther, in a panic, fled the courthouse office. She ran, Pedro went after her, but he never caught up with her and was able to escape. It took a little time for Esther to dare to look for the actor, since he ended up furious for having stood up.
Of course he reproached him and the argument they had both marked the end of their fleeting relationship. Esther, who had no kind of contempt for her former love, He suggested that they remain friends; To the surprise of many, Pedro ended up accepting without resentment.
