It can be hard to imagine Christian bale Y Ewan McGregor together, especially considering the kind of movies they often star in. On the one hand, Christian bale has proven to be a totally versatile actor who can get into any role, as we have seen in films like the batman trilogy by Christopher Nolan, Ford v. ferrari, American Psycho, among many others. Secondly, Ewan McGregor He has also shown his talent in films like Moulin Rouge!, Trainspotting either starwars.
In 1998, when both already had a solid base of successes, they became the protagonists of Velvet Goldmine. The film was directed by Todd Haynes and in addition to the two actors, it had the performances of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers Y Tony Collette.
The story follows Arthur Stuart (bale), a journalist who sets out to investigate the career and false murder of Glam Rock star Brian Slade (Rhys Meyers). To do this, he begins to interview several people who were part of the singer’s life, such as a former partner and lover (mcgregor), his ex-wife (Colette) and his manager. The film, despite being fictional, is a clear representation of the life of David Bowie. So much so, that the title of the film, Velvet Goldmineresponds to the name of a song by the singer.
Ewan McGregor put himself in the shoes of Curt Wild, a character based on Iggy-Pop. And in the film, the character shares significant screen time with the character of bale, with whom he develops an emotional and physical bond. So much so, that both actors had to film a romantic scenewhich to this day they remember with a certain grace (and shame).
The scene takes place on the terrace of a building, and Ewan McGregor recalled the sequence during an interview on the Graham Norton Show. “We were on a terrace, but they wanted to film it from another terrace, so it was a fairly open and distant shot,” the interpreter of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
“Suddenly, in the distance, we hear them yelling ‘action’ at us, so we begin to simulate the moment”. However, the seconds passed and they were still very involved in the act, to the point that mcgregor came close to the ears of bale and whispered “I think we should finish now.” But when they turned to see the technical team, everyone was already packing and putting away their cameras and equipment. “Nobody yelled ‘cut’, they just left us there. “We didn’t talk about that again,” revealed the actor with a laugh. “I think they thought it was a very sensitive moment and that it was best to let us continue,” he joked.
Once the shooting of the film is finished, both actors remained friendsalthough their relationship was almost affected when both clashed to get the leading role of American Psychowhich ended up remaining in the hands of Christian bale. Luckily, both were able to put the problem in the past and each continued to be part of great productions.
