Horror movies had a great presence in the 80s, the genre received several titles, which left a mark and even influenced new generations of horror filmmakers. One of those exponents is The Thing of John Carpenter.
In 1982, Carpenter brought to the screen a new adaptation of the book Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell. This new story, the second of the theme, shows that a group of researchers in an Antarctic post receives an unexpected visit from an extraterrestrial creature. This creature assimilates and copies its victims, making it hard to tell who is a human and who is the creature.
In addition to the story The Thing had several strong points, such as the soundtrack composed by Enio Morricone and the incredible special effects created by Rob Bottin. Although it had all this in its favor, the film was panned by critics, which affected its performance at the box office, making it a flop. Over time, Carpenter’s work became a cult film and a benchmark for horror and science fiction cinema.
In 2011 a prequel was presented, also called The Things. This one focused on the Norwegian exploration party that discovers the creature. The film was moderately successful and well received by audiences. Since then there has been talk that The Thing, the original, should have a sequel. During this year the rumors of a new movie have been circulating through the networks and now John Carpenter talks about it.
The place MovieMaker interviewed Carpenter and inquired about the aforementioned rumours. The director commented that there is nothing concrete, but in case the rumors are true, he would be happy to take over the direction.
“I don’t know. You never know. I don’t know if I want to do it. But we will have to see what the circumstances are. That’s what it’s all about these days. If it’s fully funded and if it’s something I could do, I’d like to. But we’ll see. I’m not going to say noJohn told MovieMaker.
Within what he would like to direct, Carpenter commented that he would be pleased to be able to carry out the adaptation of one of his favorite video games, the horror survival dead space.
On why he would not take over The Thing 2, Carpenter commented that he has many pending projects but that at this point “he is very old” and that he currently prefers to enjoy his life with other aspects, such as music and also gaming, since John is an avid gamer.
“There are many movies that I would love to do, I’m not going to do them, I’m too old! It’s too difficult. It’s too much stress and I enjoy my life. I am having a great time in my life. I love making music with my son and my godson. Why would I want to fuck that up? I have a lot of movies that I want to do… there are always things that I would love to have done, or I love to do, but I’m not going to do them. I’m just not going to do itCarpenter explained.
It will be a matter of time to see if John gives himself the pleasure of directing some of the films that he wants to do, the public will always be waiting for him.
