The angel of death: the dark true story behind the Netflix movie

Netflix premiere The angel of Death, film starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne. The film is based on real events and tells the story of Charlie Cullen, a nurse who confessed to having killed up to 40 patients. A number that, according to some research, could be much higher.

Born in New Jersey in 1960, Cullen was the youngest of eight children. His father was a bus driver who died before Cullen was a year old and his mother, a homemaker, died in a car accident when he was a teenager. After a tough youth, the character played by Eddie Redmayne spent a brief period in the Navy and later became a nurse.

Cullen worked in various hospitals and nursing homes, in some of which he was investigated for misconduct. So much so that an elderly woman complained that he came into her room and gave her injections, even though he was not the nurse assigned to her. He went through several medical centers in New Jersey, and even worked for a time in Pennsylvania after obtaining a license to practice in that state. It is believed that he began committing murders in the late 1980s to early 2000s, but it was in 2003, while working at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, New Jersey, that it all came to light.

Florian Gall was a reverend who was receiving treatment at the hospital. After showing signs of improvement, Gall suffered a heart attack and died. It was later determined that his system contained a lethal level of a substance called digoxin. Cullen was finally arrested in December 2003, telling investigators that he was administering these overdoses to “put sick patients out of their misery.” He admitted to committing between 30 and 40 murders, but the true number is believed to be closer to 400, which would make him the most prolific serial killer in US history.

While he was working in his last hospital, he befriended another nurse named Amy Loughren whom in the Netflix brings Jessica Chastain to life. But, after the sudden deaths of two patients, detectives began to suspect Cullen. When they showed her the documents showing the substances that Cullen administered, she immediately knew what was going on.

“He took a lot of deadly drugs that you wouldn’t use unless you wanted to kill someone,” he told CBS at that moment. Loughren began collecting evidence at the hospital and even admitted trying to manipulate the killer into confessing. In 2006 Cullen was sentenced to 11 life sentences and He is currently serving time in the New Jersey State Prison.
