Someone Great (2019) it’s the kind of movie to watch sitting on the couch or in bed with a glass of wine and a quart of ice cream. You might as well prepare to cry with our leading lady, Jenny Young, a journalist from New York who landed her dream job in San Francisco. However, her boyfriend Nate decides end your relationship nine years old as he doesn’t think they can overcome the distance. That’s why Jenny, along with her two friends, Blair and Erindecide to party for the last time to get over the breakup.
The starting point of the story is the breakup and through flashbacks we explore the relationship between the couple. However, as the night passes, Jenny, Blair and Erin will explore their feelings about the change, their goals, their frustrations and will test the unbreakable friendship they have. Which makes this movie a romantic comedy, but it doesn’t necessarily focus on the love between a couple, it explores the love felt by the three friends Y friendship among these women.
On the other hand, we are used to turning into villains those who decide to cut off the relationship -as is the case with 500 days with Summer- and, therefore, we have to get over it and let it go. However, the particular Someone Great either Someone special generates a blow to the stomach because it shows the reality of two people who love each other, but who decide to take different paths. It shows the difficulty of having to let that person go despite the fact that love endures, and the need to overcome anger and understand that people -whether they are partners or friends- accompany us to leave us a lesson.
The movie is a Netflix original production and premiered in 2019. The cast is made up of Gina Rodriguez as Jenny, best known for starring in the series Jane the Virgin, LaKeith Stanfield like Nate, Brittany Snow like Blair and DeWanda Wise like Erin.
A curious fact is that the director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, after a breakup, like everyone else, turned to music to deal with his anguish. And he stated that the fifth album of Taylor Swift, 1989, was the one that inspired her to write the film. And, interestingly enough, years later Swift saw the movie, which inspired her to write her song. Death by a Thousand Cuts. She in her verses says: “Saying goodbye, it’s a death of a thousand cuts, memories that wake me up”, which is a clear reference to the anguish Jenny feels having to overcome Nate.
While it tells a painfully realistic account of a breakup, it also provides the warmth of friendships. And if you’re interested in seeing it, it’s available at Netflix.
