Whenever I talk about him, I feel obliged to use the same phrase: Antoine Fuqua never fails. The Pittsburgh filmmaker, after training in the world of video clips for eight prolific years, began his film career with ‘Replacement Assassins’, which would be followed by great titles such as ‘Training Day’, ‘Los amos de Brookyln’ or a ‘Redemption’ ‘ which is undoubtedly one of the best sports dramas of recent years.
The reliable duo
But, among Fuqua’s great works, it is necessary to point out the unlikely reboot for the big screen of the series ‘The Equalizer’ that he signed in 2014 at the hands of a Denzel Washington as brilliant as usual in his role as a mature action hero. An infallible duo that, four years later, rounded off the original formula.
In 2018, Antoine Fuqua signed the first sequel of his career under the title of ‘The Equalizer 2’; an exemplary action thriller that continues to exploit the original formula while improving it by delving deeper into the treatment of Robert McCall —the protagonist of the show— and, especially, by taking the design of his setpieces even further.
For the memory remains a truly spectacular climax that explodes on screen after a slow cooker, and that turns the third act of the film into a memorable replica of the spaghetti western in an urban key that, once it concludes and the credits roll, leaves you wanting more. Luckily there is already a third installment on the way.
‘The Equalizer 2’, which you can see Today at 10:00 p.m. on TVE 1, opened on July 20, 2018 with a gross of $36 million during its first weekend in US theaters. His investment, estimated at 62 million dollars, ended up translating into a total of 190 million in the international market; a figure that is not insignificant if we take into account that the reception by critics, despite not being negative, did not stand out for its enthusiasm either.
