Millie Bobby Brown, between the profound message behind Enola Holmes 2 and the particular gastronomic memory of her time in Argentina: “I would love to return”

It has all the virtues that define the Holmes family. Intelligence, powers of observation and deductive reasoning well above average; an obsession with details that forges his unwavering will and determination; the revolutionary spirit necessary to change things; certain nonconformity with his time, translated into a great empathy with his environment and his peers; a certain solitary halo with which he covers his most fragile areas and masks occasional frustration. But Enola Holmes carries on her shoulders the unfair stigma of being a woman and a young woman in the heart of the Victorian era, a society that seeks to confine her behavior, clip her wings and leave her in the shadow of her famous older brother: Sherlock Holmes..

Two years after his first cinematographic foray, Enola Holmes 2 hits netflix this friday with a frantic adventure based on the true story that ended up changing the world of industrial relations in the United Kingdom and propelled the development of the British trade union movement. Exclusively, in the middle of the film’s promotional tour, Millie Bobby Brownproducer and star of the film, spoke with THE NATION via Zoom, anticipating part of the challenge that awaits the young detective capable of breaking the fourth wall and dialogue with viewers around the world.

-Enola Holmes is a modern woman trapped in an old time?

-Of course. He is a very layered character; And that’s what attracted me most to her. She has the intellect of a genius, she is intelligent, independent and strong, but at the same time vulnerable. I fell in love with her reading her series of books; and I decided to buy the rights for my production company. That’s how I started making movies.

-Without spoiling anything, what could you tell us about Enola Holmes 2?

The sequel features a new case, based on a historical episode that actually happened. That leads her to get into a strike of workers in a match factory, in London at the end of the eighteen hundred. She also romances him, develops her sibling relationship with Sherlock, and interacts, very seriously, with her mother and the revolutionary women’s group she belongs to.

-It’s a very colorful film, with a lot of humor and adventure, but it shows a somewhat darker society than the one in the first part, don’t you think?

-Totally agree. It is a contrast that we wanted to highlight, also marking a transition between films. If you goggle “late 1800″, most of the images that appear to you are in black and white; and people tend to forget that this real world was in colors, full of energy, brightness and vitality. We wanted to show it like this, because what surrounds the match is something else. A very dark theme for an increasingly dark society.

-The film takes place in the Victorian era, but deals with some extremely current topics: gender issues, feminism, corruption, class struggle. As a producer of the saga, was it something you were interested in talking about on time?

I was interested in talking about labor relations, and specifically about the exploitation suffered by women. Because I believe that female workers deserve respect, protection and the full exercise of their rights, just like any other person who works. And by telling this story, we were also able to shed some light on sexism, ageism, and female empowerment, as well as solve a police case.

-And what is more important for Enola: to solve the dilemma or to show Sherlock, society and perhaps herself, that a woman can be as capable and intelligent as any other man of the time?

-That is a crucial point. Enola works to do both at the same time, because by solving the case he shows who he really is.

Although she is responsible for initiating millions of teenagers into the police universe of Sherlock Holmes, Enola was not part of the literary canon signed by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle between 1887 and 1927. Created by the American writer Nancy Springer, Enola has starred in seven novels children-juveniles published between 2006 and 2021, the last of them appeared after the first film by Millie Bobby Brown was seen by 76 million homes only in the first month of exhibition. In both worlds (printed and audiovisual), borrowing characters and locations established in the original Sherlock Holmes fictions, Enola builds her figure as a detective in opposition to and complementary to that of the illustrious inhabitant of 221 Baker Street.. Played again by Henry Cavill, the current cinematic Superman, the Sherlock of Enola Holmes 2 he continues to cultivate his cerebral, ironic and somewhat egotistical profile, but resigns much of his characteristic coldness to appear more sensitive, melancholic and human; three facets that are being shaped by the influence of his sister.

-In the new film, Sherlock Holmes has a much more active role than in the first. In fact, some foundational milestones for the future myth of the detective are addressed. Is a detachment from the saga starring Henry Cavill’s Sherlock coming? And what was it like working with him?

-Working with Henry was incredible, a dream come true. He is an excellent actor and to see him play Sherlock in such a different and unique way, it is something extraordinary. Of the rest, I will not say anything.

Are we going to see a third installment of Enola Holmes?

-I hope so. I’d love to. Netflix trusted me to make two movies, so I hope they trust me once again.
