‘Mama Coco’, the Mexican granny who inspired Disney movie, died

The woman who inspired the famous character of “Mama Coco” died this Sunday. Through social networks, the death of Doña María Salud Ramírez Caballerothe tender Mexican granny in which Disney was based to give life to the film related to the Day of the Dead that went around the world showing one of the greatest traditions of our country.

The Secretary of Tourism of the state of Michoacán announced the sad death at 109 years of age of “Mamá Coco”as Doña María was known since the animated film premiered in 2017, where “Mamá Coco” is the grandmother of “Miguel”a boy who manages to cross into the world of the dead to meet his great-grandparents.

Roberto Monroy, Secretary of Tourism of the entity, published on his networks: “I deeply regret the death of Doña María Salud Ramírez Caballero, “mama Coco”, tireless woman and example of life, who was the inspiration for this beloved character who went around the world. My prayers for her rest and for her family to find resignation.”

After the premiere of the film in 2017, the Pixar producers confirmed who made trips to various states of Mexico to investigate the traditions of the Day of the Dead. Even they lived with several local families, one of them was the family of María Salud Ramírez Caballeroso the fans realized that the character of “Mamá Coco” had similarities with the older adult from Michoacán.

Who was Maria Salud?

María Salud Ramírez Caballero spent her entire life in the town of Santa Fe de la Laguna, in the municipality of Quiroga, in Michoacán, and she herself assured in interviews that when the producers of “Coco” visited her, took some photos in order to create the character.

According to local media, “Mama Coco” was born in September 1913 and throughout his life he remained living in his hometown. There he raised his family and devoted himself to pottery and home.
