There are weeks in which there are many premieres on VOD platforms, and among them one or two of real weight and depth. This week there are not as many premieres as the previous one -46 in total, compared to 70 last week-, but there are many important ones and some of the most anticipated of the year. We have everything from the latest Marvel UCM blockbuster to the new iteration of one of the most popular Netflix series. What we don’t have is time to see everything, since the VOD services seem to have agreed to challenge each other at the same time of the month.
We start with the mega-premiere, which is from Disney +: still in theaters, on Wednesday, June 22, it arrives Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fulfilling the promise of being released on Disney + after 45 days of its theatrical release. The film, a direct sequel to the Wandavisión series, focuses on the dangers of messing with the multiverse, and is directed by a splendid Sam Raimi (Spiderman trilogy with Tobey Maguire) who is given free rein by Marvel to remember his thug days ( and macabre) from The Army of Darkness. Be careful with the final third, not recommended for young children – basically like almost the entire movie.
Another of the premieres of Disney + is the second season of the splendid Just Murder in the Building, about the three strangers who share an obsession with true crimes and who suddenly find themselves embroiled in one while investigating the mysterious death of a neighbor in their New York apartment building, with Selena Gomez and two of the greatest American comedians of the century 20, Martin Short and Steve Martin. Also this week comes the obi-wan season 1 finalein case the thing was missing and premieres…
Y Trevor: The Musical: It’s 1981 America, and Trevor Nelson is busy navigating adolescence in the suburbs while dreaming of a life in show business. When an embarrassing incident at school suddenly puts him in the wrong spotlight, Trevor must summon the courage to forge his own path. A deeply moving and funny story about self-discovery and the power of acceptance, Trevor the Musical is about living your best life with a lot of passion…and a touch of pizzazz.
Netflix doesn’t stay lame as we have The Paper House: Korea, South Korean remake of the Spanish series that passed unnoticed on Spanish television, but that in its re-release on Netflix became one of the platform’s global milestones. In this version we have a group of thieves take over the Mint of a unified Korea. With hostages trapped, the police must stop them, as well as the mastermind behind the hit. Will actress Jeon Jong-seo’s Tokyo have the same impact as Úrsula Corberó’s homeland?
And we continue with hea The Umbrella Academy Season 3, based on the comic by Daniel Way and Gabriel Bá edited by Dark Horse and that will follow the cliffhanger that the second season left us. Another focus of interest this season will be Vanya Hargreeves’ transgender transition, mimicking the one the actor formerly known as Ellen Page and now Elliot Page has followed in real life. And Borgen: Kingdom, Power and Glory: Foreign Minister Birgitte Nyborg’s career is in jeopardy when the fight over Greenland’s oil threatens to escalate into an international crisis.
HBO Max brings its heavyweight, Westworld Season 4: After two seasons that caught people’s attention to the point of calling Westworld the new Game of Thrones, season 3 didn’t like the fans at all and divided opinion about the series, which this month has a continuation that seems to answer those questions that were left pending two years ago.
Movistar+ brings among others Ghostbusters: Beyond, achieved a reboot of the saga as well as an epilogue to the two films from 1984 and 1989 that bet on the mixture of the eighties nostalgia of the original, and the dysfunctional families that its director likes so much. Superb tribute to both the ghost hunter Egon Spengler and the long-awaited actor Harold Ramis, with an ending that is better not to spoil anything.
Two weighty movies, Amazon Prime Video brings us moon fall, the last Roland Emmerich of catastrophes destroyed by critics -and by the public, which has been one of the mega-failures of the year- in which the Moon threatens to collide with the Earth. Y The Gucci House, the most recent Ridley Scott that tells us the real case of the murder of Mauricio Gucci, a story that seems ‘fake’ but that shows how reality always surpasses fiction, with a luxury cast with Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Lady Gaga and Al Pacino.
Also follow the tseason 3 of The Boys, which this week brings the episode ‘Herogasm‘, based on the number of the most censored comic for representing a weekend of sexual festival between superheroes without restrictions, limits or anything.
