Director James Mangold is about to release Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate and reveals his problems with the fourth film.
Since the 1980s, Indiana Jones has become one of the most beloved action characters in cinema, but the fourth installment that was released in 2008 did not reach the level that fans wanted. Luckily, now they will premiere the fifth and this time James Mangold will be the director.
In a recent interview with VarietyJames Mangold explained how his film’s prologue solves one of his biggest problems Indiana Jones 4: “What’s so beautiful about the best Indiana Jones movies is that thematically they know what they’re about. I felt like I didn’t know what the crystal skull realm was all about. He is living in a world that has outgrown him, a world that has found new heroes like John Glenn or Elvis Presley. No one in the movie really thinks about the past. Everyone is focused on the future.”
They have also revealed why they chose the dial of fate.
Indiana Jones 5 begins 12 years after the Crystal Skull, taking place around the time of the 1969 moon landing. That’s why Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said: “Indy had spent her entire life exploring time. Once James Mangold tapped into that as a theme, he resonated emotionally, frankly, with all of us who have invested more than 40 years in this storytelling.”
The film will mark the last time Harrison Ford will play Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones, Jr., a role he has held since 1981. In this new film, Indiana Jones and his goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) seek Archimedean dial.
