Hollywood star converts to the Catholic faith after playing Padre Pio

Actor Shia LaBeouf, known for his starring role in three Transformers films, announced that he converted to the Catholic faith while working on his upcoming film “Padre Pio,” in which he plays the Italian saint.

“Now I know that God was using my ego to draw me to Him, away from worldly desires. It was all happening simultaneously,” LaBeouf confessed. In an interview made by the Bishop of Winona-Rochester (United States), Mons. Robert Barron, in a YouTube program of his ministry “Word on Fire”.

During the interview, the actor revealed that he had suicidal thoughts before he started shooting the film in Italy and that he only accepted the role to save his career, which had been hit hard by personal scandals.

“I wouldn’t have had any impulse to get in my car and drive to the monastery if I hadn’t thought, ‘oh, I’m going to save my career.'”

Regarding the depression he suffered from, he confessed that at one point he had “a gun on the table” and that “he no longer wanted to be alive.”

“I felt shame like I had never experienced before, the kind of shame that makes you forget how to breathe. You don’t know where to go. You can’t go out and order a taco. But I also had this deep desire to hold on”, he counted.

In the interview, LaBeouf said that God used the film to draw him into the Church, since the only reason he had to play Padre Pio was to resume his career.

“When I got here, a change happened. It was like someone cheated on me, not in a bad way. In a way I couldn’t realize. It was so close that he couldn’t feel it. I see it differently now that time has passed, ”she assured.

The Transformers star also said that learning about forgiveness and repentance was critical to coming out of depression and knowing God’s Mercy.

“I saw that there were other people who have sinned even beyond what I could ever imagine and who meet Christ. That made me feel like I had hope,” he assured.

In the hour-long interview, LaBeouf also revealed his experience with the Rosary, the Eucharist, reading the Confessions of St. Augustine, his liking for the traditional Latin Mass, and the peace he found after reconciling with his mother.

LaBeouf Plays Padre Pio is an upcoming film directed by Abel Ferrara, exploring the life of the Capuchin Franciscan mystic.

The recordings of the film were made in January 2022 on location in Puglia (or Apulia). To prepare for the role, LaBeouf lived in a monastery with Capuchin friars.

The film is scheduled to premiere at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival, which runs from August 31 to September 10.
