In the last days hbo max has been hectic. The streaming service has seen changes, from unannounced releases of titles, name change rumors and more. Now another important fact is added, the change of premieres from cinema to streaming and in Elvis would be the first test.
in 2020 hbo max surprised with its hybrid release plan, which featured a movie at the same time in theaters and on the debuting streaming service. This action was named Project Popcorn and was directed by Jason Kilar, the former CEO of Warner Media.
Movies like Tenet, Godzilla vs Kong, Mortal Kombat, among others, were released at the same time. The situation was not what the company expected, since significant losses were recorded, this led to an adjustment that concluded that the movie premiere would take approximately 45 days to reach the streaming service.
Now that the creation of Warner Bros Discoveryit was revealed that Project Popcorn is close to seeing the end. According to reported decidethe company will review release by release and evaluate when the right date could be to launch it in hbo max.
It was recently learned that Elvis, who continues to be successful in the cinema, would arrive at the service of streaming now in august. Now it is confirmed that during this month Elvis will see the launch in home formats, but not in hbo max. This means that Baz Luhrmann’s acclaimed film will not arrive within 45 days, it will only do so when Warner Bros Discovery arrange it.
David Zaslav, the director of the recently merged company, stated that the end of Project Popcorn is due to financial reasons. “This idea of expensive movies going straight to streaming, we can’t find an economic case for it. We are making a strategic change. As part of that, we’ve been around town talking about our commitment to theatrical display and theatrical window”, declared the director.
The company’s plan is not entirely clear, but what is certain is that Elvis and the next releases will take longer to reach streaming.
