First look at “Back to Black”, the biopic of Amy Winehouse

We already have the first image of Back to Blackthe film based on the life of the British singer Amy Winehouse. The actress Marisa Abela (Industry) will play the star who died in 2011 from a poisoning after long years fighting his addiction to drugs and alcohol. The biopic is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and written by Matt Greenhalgh, both previously collaborated on no where boy (the film inspired by the origins of John Lennon).

According to the official synopsis, “it will focus on Amy’s extraordinary genius, creativity and honesty that permeated everything she did. A journey that took her from the madness and color of 90s Camden High Street to global adoration, and back again, Back to Black go through the celebrity mirror to see this journey behind the mirror, to see what Amy saw, to feel what she felt.”

The Winehouse behind-the-scenes story project is supported by Universal Music, Sony Music and The Amy Winehouse Estate. Furthermore, it bears the title of her most successful album of hers and the second she released in her musical career; this included not only the famous song of the same name, but also the hits “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good”.

On his motivation to direct Back to BlackSam Taylor-Johnson admitted that she finds her connection to Amy Winehouse around the time she dropped out of college and hung out in Camden: “I got a job at the legendary KOKO Club, and I can still breathe every market stall, shop vintage and street… A few years later, Amy wrote her deeply honest songs while living in Camden. Just like with me, she became part of her “DNA” from her.

She also told about how she was captivated by her talent when she attended a presentation by the artist known for her rhythms. soul, jazz, R&B and Caribbean-influenced: “I first saw her perform in a talent show at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in Soho and immediately realized she wasn’t just ‘talent’… she was genius . As a filmmaker, you really couldn’t ask for more.”

The 26-year-old English actress Marisa Abela was chosen to put her face and voice in the characterization of one of the greatest figures in music. Born in Brigton, UK, the rising star comes from a family with Arabic, Polish and Russian-Jewish roots.

Abela made her television debut in 2020 with a leading role in COBRAan action series broadcast by the British channel Sky One. However, the role that led her to have a greater impact in the industry was that of Yasmin Kara-Hanani for Industry, HBO’s dramatic fiction. In addition to her leading role in Black to Blackintegrates the cast of the upcoming film Barbieby Greta Gerwig.

The biopic of Amy Winehouse does not yet have a release date in theaters or on streaming platforms. streaming.
