Context

In 2017, The Walt Disney Company acquired 20th Century Fox, keeping all its projects, properties and creations. 8 years earlier, in 2009, Cameron had brought to light Avatar, his innovative idea. This was the first major production to use IMAX 3D and real 3D technology. In fact, it helped change the concept of that tool that was held until then.

Before the movies 3D they saw themselves with glasses with a red and a blue lens and when they saw the screen, the objects simulated leaving it. After the arrival of Avatar, the definition took a turn towards the increase in image quality and the sensation of reality.

In this way, with the purchase of ‘The house of mouse’, one of the most benefited franchises was this. Since the negotiation was made, the new owners were very interested in getting more out of it. Thus, the company decided to keep what the director said in 2015that three more tapes would be made.

Disney decided to put all its efforts into that and in 2018 one of the most challenging cinematographic events began to take place: The sense of water. The sequel was immediately scheduled for release in December 2021, but the pandemic prevented its early release. Likewise, the company rescheduled everything for 2022 and finally the final date of the December 15, 2022.

What is it about?

Despite being the highest grossing film in history, having grossed $2.9 trillion, there are those who have never heard of it. Others, who have heard it, have not seen it. Even others who have seen it, do not remember it. For all these, a brief summary of the central plot of it is made.

It is set in the year 2154 and its central events take place in Pandora, a moon (and apparently the largest) of a Jupiter-like planet called Polyphemus. This land is inhabited by a humanoid species called na’viwith which humans are in conflict because one of their clans is settled around a gigantic tree that covers an immense vein of a highly valued mineral and that would be the solution to the Earth’s energy problems: the unobtainium. Jake Sully, a paralyzed Marine, is selected to participate in the Avatar program. This project claims to be able to transport the minds of scientists to artificial bodies of na’vi to make communication with natives easier. By trying several times, the military manages to get it to work.

During that quest for trust between Jake and the na’vi, Jake must be approved by the tribe and experiences all the relationships with the forest, fauna and flora that the natives have. In the same way, he becomes familiar with and cohabits with his customs and his language. Despite the scientific end of the project, Colonel Quaritch, who leads the defense of the human base on Pandora, convinces Jake to provide him with information about the natives in case force is needed to remove them.

At first, Jake fully fulfills his mission like a good soldier, but falls in love of one of the natives, Neytiri. Connecting even more with the Na’vi, she realizes that they will never give up their land, making armed conflict inevitable. He begins to debate which side he is on and many begin to see the cruelty towards an entire planet.

It should be noted that this project was the result of 15 years of work. James Cameron started the Avatar script in 1994, but he was looking for more and more elements so that his investigation would be perfect. Furthermore, the process was not only creative, but also technical. The filmmaker helped develop technologies needed to produce a CGI and visual effects that had not been seen before.
