Disney can no longer trust ‘The Mandalorian’: the audience for the third season does not look good

Disney is beginning to run out of more or less infallible options. We were talking a couple of days ago about the cancellation of ‘Willow’, exclusive to Disney+. Besides not speaking too highly of the quality of this sequel, suggests that perhaps nostalgia and IPs from another time are not infallible by themselves: you have to season them with attractive products. Now it is the turn of the apparent untouchable asset of ‘Star Wars’ today: ‘The Mandalorian’.

In The Wrap have some data that cast doubt on the infallibility of the series starring Pedro Pascal and his putative son: its first episode, according to data collected by SambaTv, would have had an audience of 1.6 million viewers, that is, along the lines of his spin-off ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ (2% less, in fact), considered by many viewers as a failed continuation of the Mandalorian’s adventures. And it is not the only series worse considered than ‘The Mandalorian’ that has overtaken him on the right.

For example, ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, despite being the ‘Star Wars’ series received more lukewarm by critics and the public, obtained 28% more audiences with its first chapter. SambaTv also takes the comparison to Marvel, and determines that it reached 35% less than ‘Loki’. The only one that has surpassed has been ‘Andor’, a series that Although it was better received by the media and the public, it did not succeed in audiences, getting 50% less audience.

The reason for a fall

It should be remembered that the Samba TV data comes from television sets collaborating with the company, three million of them in the United States and some 17 million in the rest of the world. It is a large enough sample to conclude that ‘The Mandalorian’ has not gone as well as expected. It is, perhaps, the definitive sign that the ‘Star Wars’ brand is suffocating for various reasons.

One of them can certainly be the depletion of the brand after some products that have not fulfilled as expected of them, ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ in the lead. Another may be the lack of ‘Star Wars’ movies that renew the mythology: currently, all the series resort to the “already invented” to tell their stories, which undoubtedly conveys a feeling of exhaustion and scarcity of narrative resources.
