“Gloria, you are always in a hurry, running after someone and you have to get it somehow” Laura Branigan sang in 1982. And Glorythe movie of Sebastian Lelio available in Netflix could start like this.
The Chilean cinema of the 21st century has demonstrated a very high level, with productions that not only have great technical work, but also an originality that gives it an identity seal. Remember that a few years ago, a fantastic woman he won Oscar Award for Best Foreign Film, being the first in history for a Chilean film. Also, movies like Machuca, Neruda or Dry Martina they have done nothing more than raise the bar and factually demonstrate that we may be in the best moment of trans-Andean cinema.
In this film the main character is Glory, a lady who, from what we can deduce, is around 60 years old. She is separated and frequents a bowling alley where she goes alone and dances with different men she meets on different nights. The introduction of the film shows us a woman who is on a search, which is the first point of attraction, since it is not so common to see movies where the characters they are looking for (forgive the redundancy), are great. First point for Lelio: a bath of reality and a little explored look: the desire of adult people.
Gloria has been separated for a few years. She has two children and a grandson. She is a present mother and grandmother, but it is clear that the relationship between them is not as close as she would like. She endows each scene with some silence that makes her uncomfortable. The constant ellipses in them also give us a small discomfort that makes us wonder: how long have they been like this? And a little we, like maybe Gloria, want to run away.
Everything seems to be going more or less well, until Rodolfo appears, a man who falls in love with her after meeting her at the bowling alley. He, recently divorced, is almost the opposite of Gloria: he has two daughters and takes full care of them, who neither work nor study. He also supports his ex-wife and, above all, he seems to want to get away from that situation all the time but his guilt stops him.
They will start like this passionate romance, a rediscovery of passion, adventure and love that will show that age is just a number, although Gloria will understand that perhaps her priorities are not the same as Rodolfo’s. A journey with lights and shadows, an adult adventure that does not hide or simplify anything. A story that does not fall into melodramas and that sums up, after all, that it is never too late for love… or for heartbreak.
