Christian Bale on working on Marvel movies: “It’s the definition of monotony”

This summer, Christian Bale took over from Cate Blanchett as the star villain of the Thor saga and played Gorr, the Butcher of the Gods, in the recent Thor: Love and Thunder. An applauded performance, one of the best in the film, which meant the premiere of the award-winning actor at the UCM (Marvel Cinematic Universe). But for Bale, Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter and eternal Dark Knight in our memory, the experience might not have been as good as expected. Working between green screens and depending so much on effects has led him to make some statements for GQ Magazine after which it is difficult for us to see him repeating:

“It’s the first time I’ve done it and is the definition of monotony. You have a lot of good actors with much more experience than me, but you can’t even tell one day from another. You are absolutely incapable. You have no idea what you’re doingBale confesses. “I couldn’t even tell one scenario from the next. They’d tell you “You’re on set number three” and it’s like, where? “You are now on stage seven.” Which one is that? “The blue”. Uh… which one?”

The actor wasn’t even sure people would like his performance as Gorr. “Other actors, whom I respect immensely, told me that before others like me, my character had to like me. And I thought: well, I don’t know if they will like it. I do not like it“. It even felt a little frustrated at not being able to practice more method work. “It was complicated between all the help I needed to put on and take off the fangs. I was just trying not to break my nails and not trip over the robe“.

Wanda joins the criticism of the Marvel method

The statements come at the same time as others from Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) in which the actress assures that the Marvel movies “they are very silly and it is very embarrassing to film this kind of thing“. According to her, none of the cast members quite know what the script is and many of the scenes admired by fans are improvised on the fly. “They’re really dumb, but you have to work your ass off to make them work. There’s a lot of stupid stuff on set and I always look forward to the day they release a version of the movie without any special effects at all.”

In the case of Olsen it is especially bloody because, despite not being entirely happy with the experience, extended his relationship with Marvel both in the Wandavision series and in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and in fact she is expected to Phases 5 and 6 of the MCU. They must have something good then$, right?
