The role in “The Whale” is Fraser’s first big role in 12 years.
Movie star Brendan Fraser gave an emotional acceptance speech after receiving the best actor award at the Critics’ Choice Awards for “The Whale.”
“I was in the desert. And I probably should have left a trail of crumbs. But you found me,” he told the film’s director Darren Aronofsky.
The “The Mummy” actor has been lauded for his role as a morbidly obese and depressed man, his first major role in 12 years.
Fraser was an iconic star during the ’90s, starring in movies like “The Mummy,” “George of the Jungle,” and “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” However, due to health problems caused by excessive filming, Fraser disappeared from the big screen for a long period, in which he only played supporting roles on television, he revealed to GQ magazine in 2018.
There are high expectations that Fraser will take an award nomination EITHEROscar from the Academy this month.
“If you – a guy like Charlie, who I played in the movie – suffer in any way from obesity, or just feel like you’re in a dark sea, I want you to know that if you too can have the strength to get up and go light, good things will happen to you,” Fraser said, to a standing ovation.
“This movie, ‘The Whale,’ is about love. It’s about redemption. It’s about finding the light in a dark place.”
“And I’m so proud to have been able to work with such an amazing cast,” he added, referencing his fellow actors, including Hong Chau and Sadie Sink.
