“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, its theatrical release in France is in danger

Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa, Black Panther) passed away on August 28, 2020 from colon cancer.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” will be the next movie Marvel Studios whose premiere is scheduled for November this year. The sequel to the film that, starring the late Chadwick Bosemanswept 2018 with more than 1,000 million dollars at the box office, will hit theaters in a very different landscape after the consolidation of streaming and the crisis of post-pandemic theaters.

And to guarantee the maximum profitability of exploitation with the film, Disney could make a decision that could jeopardize the film’s release in France.

In its eagerness to preserve the cinematographic experience in theaters, the European country approved several months ago a legislation that prohibits a film released in theaters from streaming before 17 months have elapsed.

After passing through theaters, the tape must be exploited in markets such as the physical format (DVD, Blu-Ray, etc.) and in video-on-demand services such as Canal+.

Only when practically a year and a half has passed since the theatrical release, can the platforms publish them. That means that, until now, no film of Marvel Phase 4 It can still be seen on Disney+ France.

This period of time is much longer than in most countries in the world. For this reason, as stated in Le Film Francais (via The Direct), Disney considers choosing to directly release the sequel to “Black Panther” on its own streaming platform.

This would allow them to include it in their catalog before the aforementioned 17 months, but in turn would deprive the public of seeing “Wakanda Forever” on the big screen.

The risky measure, which would mean a huge economic blow to French cinemas, It is also understood as an act of pressure from the study for the French authorities to reform their film laws again and reduce the 17-month window.

In the same source, a small statement by Disney is collected in which their doubts are publicly stated. “The media timeline forces us to evaluate our theatrical releases on a film-by-film basis.. We have not yet made a decision on the black panther release“, says the statement.

In fact, the UCM film would not be the first to suffer this fate, since last June it was announced that the next Disney Animation film, “Strange World”, will also come directly to streaming in France.

In case they finally decide not to launch “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” in French cinemas, the film will not be seen in the country until, probably, 45-50 days after its release in the rest of the world.

This time is the window of exclusivity for the rooms that has been maintained in 2022 in countries such as the United States. Thus, set for theatrical release on November 11, 2022, it will not be until at least December 26 when the film can be seen through Disney+.
