Many film industries in this strange and beautiful world in which we live have their own body that, among other activities, is dedicated to rewarding their national cinema. Mexico is not the exception; here we have the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences (AMACC) who awards the Ariel Prize with the intention of giving the recognition that Mexican filmmakers deserve. It must be remembered that many of them work hard against all kinds of adversities in order to bring their vision to fruition, even in these pandemic times and in which the cuts to culture have not stopped.
This ceremony takes place from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema to date. It is commendable that the ceremony continues despite all the adversities it has faced over the years, but especially in the present. It must be taken into account that even many national productions had to be delayed and have all kinds of setbacks due to the pandemic. That has made last year’s ceremony and this year much more meaningful than normal. The 63rd edition has shown us that the future of our cinema remains as bright as ever
On this occasion, two of the five films nominated for Best Picture are from Netflix: The three deaths of Marisela Escobedo – 100% and Tragic Jungle – 83%. That said, the favorite to win this time is Without Particular Signs – 100%, Mexican film that focuses on the great problem of disappearance of migrants. The film has managed to triumph at various festivals, including the Morelia International Film Festival and the San Sebastián Film Festival, in the latter it won the Horizontes Latinos Award. You couldn’t rule out the possibility that Tragic Jungle could surprise us in this category. The film also had a hot run at festivals and Yulene Olaizola He has always been an interesting voice on the national scene and in that film it is perfectly noticeable for his way of using a mythical figure like Xtabay to reflect on current problems.
Like last year, the animation has picked up a bit of steam. For a long time it was one of the absences from the ceremony, but this year it has three exponents: The League of 5 – 90%, School of fear and A Costume for Nicolás – 100%. The latter is the one with the best chances of winning in this category.
One of the traditions of this ceremony is the Ariel de Oro, award to recognize the great trajectories in the national cinematography; that is, people without whose talent the cinema of our country would simply not be the same. This year goes to the Yucatecan actress Ophelia Medina which is mainly remembered for her participation in Frida, living nature (1983), a fundamental film of Mexican cinema of the second half of the twentieth century that won all kinds of awards, including Best Picture. It will also be awarded to the sound engineer Fernando Chamber, who has worked in national and international films such as Cronos – 89%, Captain of Sea and War: The Farthest Coast in the World – 85%, O Cesar Chavez – 39%.
