‘All Quiet on the Front’, Netflix’s Disturbing Anti-War Movie

This Friday a third adaptation of the novel arrives on Netflix “No news at the front”, by the German writer and war veteran Erich Maria Remarque. The film had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, receiving favorable reviews for its raw and dramatic representation of war.

This new interpretation is the first directed by a German director and it comes almost a century after the publication of Remarque’s book.

The best known and most famous film adaptation of the book is the one from 1930, directed by the Russian-American Lewis Milestone. This film produced by Universal Studios won best film and best direction at the third installment of the Oscars.

“All Quiet on the Front” tells the story of Paul Bäumer, a young soldier on the Western Front of World War I. Just like the 1930’s classic, the Netflix version crudely portrays the horrors of war and its impact on combatants, both young and old.

Currently, the most recent adaptation of “All Quiet on the Front” has a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and 3.6 stars out of five on Letterboxd.

Opinions have been favorable for this interpretation of Remarque’s anti-war classic. Critic Cary Darling writes in his review of the film: “The last scene comes as a blow to the stomach; one that reverberates with more meaning in 2022, as war once again darkens the skies over Europe.”

Remarque was inspired by his own experience as a soldier in the First World War to write “All Quiet on the Front”. In 1929, the book was released to both praise and criticism. At the time, Germans felt the book denigrated Germany’s war effort. On the other hand, other critics considered the novel an anti-war masterpiece.

During the Nazi regime, the book was banned for being considered a “traitor” to the represent war in a non-heroic way.

The themes that the book deals with are: the tragedy of warthe doubts about the meaning of it, the camaraderie among the soldiers, loss of youth, trauma unimaginable that it means to them to fight in the war and what it will mean rebuild their lives after the war.
