“Look, if you mess with Malvinas you don’t go out anymore”He warned Stephen Trieswho in the war fought in the 3rd regiment. The dimension was for Nicholas Canale, who has no veteran relatives, although he does have friends with relatives or acquaintances who fought in the conflict. His interest grew as he read some books and stories that were published in the media.

The first that tries he advised Channel, 37, with training in film directing and the project of recounting the conflict from the veterans’ point of view, was to travel to the islands as a starting point. That was perhaps the origin of “1982 The Gesta”from the production company El Faro, which premieres this Thursday and in which Channel is its director.

He traveled in January 2019 with some friends and verified that the veteran’s advice made sense. It was a week full of emotions in the different tours they made through the different battlefields, where they found remains of soldiers’ belongings and vestiges of hard combat. However, he clarified, the visit to the Darwin cemetery was the most emotional point. “You feel more committed to the cause”assured.

Channel he was of the idea that, 40 years after the conflict, there was still a debt with the veterans, who he calls heroes. “There is a lack of recognition, beyond the fact that for some time the facts of the war have been broadcast by the media”.

The proximity of 40 years was the incentive they needed to give shape to the project. A year ago the idea was transformed into a film. Together with his partners from the production company Faro Films – Matthias Payer as overall producer; Claudia Echeverria, production assistant and Patrick Dondo, montajista- a script was drawn up, based on the main dates of the conflict, such as April 2, the sinking of the Belgrano, the English landing, the ceasefire. During February the testimonies were recorded. What took the longest was the assembly and editing of the hours they had recorded of the testimonies that appear in the film.

It was an additional task to refine the list of veterans to interview. The original was very long and had to be shortened due to time constraints. He regrets not having been able to include combatants from the Prefecture, Gendarmerie or civilians. They were aware that everything could not be told in eighty minutes.

The phrase that accompanies the title of the film is promising. “Malvinas as never told”.

Where were they and what did they think when they found out on April 2, 1982 that the Malvinas Islands had been recovered? How were they summoned to participate in the conflict? They were afraid? How does it feel to lose a fallen comrade in combat? What does the Malvinas mean to you? Were some of the questions that the veterans answered with an open heart.

Canale highlighted the humility of the testimonies. “They don’t want to feel like heroes, everyone says that the real heroes are the fallen ones, they take all the credit,” he explained.

He stressed that the content of all the interviews is impressive and each one has its particularities. Some are very illustrative, like the aviators.

The list of veterans that are included in the film are Jorge Guidobono; Lautaro Jimenez Corbalan; Horacio Fernando Lauría; Jorge Manresa; Roberto Reyes; Carlos Daniel Esteban; Walter Rubies; Horacio Sanchez Marino; Esteban Tries; Jose Alberto Vasquez; Daniel Villena; Esteban Vilgre La Madrid; Pablo Carballo; Daniel Eduardo Galvez; Eduardo Garcia Puebla; Carlos Rinke; Carlos Tomba; Matthew Vottero; Antonio Zelaya; Alberto Deluchi Levene; Peter Galazzi; Alfredo Luzuriaga and Jose Luis Denti.

The financing was obtained to pure lung. An important boost was the contribution of the Municipality of San Miguel, but there were many people enthusiastic about the project who collaborated with one or two thousand pesos, and there were others who even did it with dollars.
