Generation Z is made up of people between 16 and 24 years old, which means that those who are adolescents or young adults at the moment belong to them. Like all generations, it is one with its own identity, different tastes and ideologies that want to break the mold. This also means that they identify icons that older people may not know about.
For this reason, GetCenturyLink did a study to discover which are the most recognized icons of popular culture among Generation Z. His find was interesting, since it turns out that Pikachu, the electric mouse that is the face of Pokémon, is the most recognized icon of popular culture.
The cool facts don’t end there. It turns out that the study also revealed that Sonic the Hedgehog is better known among Gen-Z than Bill Gates, Dua Lipa, and William Shakespeare. That’s right: more people recognized the blue hedgehog than a tycoon; to one of the most famous singers of today and to a classical author.
One striking point is that Gen Z was able to identify 80% of video game characters. This means that it is an extremely popular medium among the new generations.
Now you are probably wondering, how was the methodology to arrive at these results? 1800 youths in the United States between the ages of 16 and 24 were tested. The little test consisted of matching images of different characters and celebrities with their names.
