This is the ultra-fast train that reaches 1,200 km/h and overtakes Elon Musk’s Hyperloop

The commitment to decarbonising the transport industry is giving rise to highly ambitious projects. Ultra-fast trains capable of reaching speeds in excess of 1,000 km/h are no longer a product of the imagination. The same thing happens with railways that move along magnetic levitation rails without using energy. It is the case of network railwhich circulates through the Chinese province of Jiangxi.

A few years ago Elon Musk, owner and founder of Tesla, announced in collaboration with the engineers of Space X, another company owned by him, the manufacture of the hyper loop. It is a supersonic train, which has not yet seen the light of day, which moves through a system of closed tubes at the same speed as an airplane.

The colossal railway project of the South African tycoon is dead. Since 2016, only tests have been carried out with prototypes manufactured on a real scale or in very short distance sections and it does not seem that, for now, this is the musk priority. Quite the contrary, if we take into account that the company in charge of experimenting with the Hyperloop is committed to a project of underground tunnels for the circulation of electric vehicles.

Canadian company TransPod is set to take the lead on Musk’s Hyperloop by building an ultra-fast train. Its name is FluxJet, a hybrid between a high-speed train and an airplane, which will cover the 299 kilometers that separate Calgary and Edmonton in just 45 minutes. That is, using three times less time than with current high-speed trains.

TransPod, the company leading the project, uses magnetic levitation technology so that its trains can reach supersonic speeds

The FluxJet has been designed to be a faster and cleaner means of transport than airplanes since it does not use fossil fuels. It is powered by renewable energies and can reach a maximum speed of up to 1,200 km/h, which makes it half faster than a jet plane and three times faster than high-speed train.

The use of a contactless energy transmission system, a technology that also has aerodynamic and propulsion systems to reduce friction, is what allows the capsules to reach speeds of over 1,000 km/h. To function, however, it needs its own road infrastructure with stations in key cities.

TransPod has announced that the superfast train will first connect the towns of Calgary and Edmonton, two of the most important cities in Canada. It will offer transportation services for both passengers and goods.

The train consists of a set of capsules with a capacity for 54 passengers or 10 tons of cargo each.

Each train or capsule is 25 meters long and 3.25 meters high and is capable of transporting a maximum of 54 passengers. Its interior is accessed through doors located at the ends, which are reached by means of platforms placed on the platforms. With regard to its use as a freight train, each capsule admits a load of up to 10 tons.

The company responsible for launching the FluxJet has not announced the year in which the ultra-fast train is scheduled to enter service. At the moment it has only transpired that the cost of the project is 18,000 million dollars, so the construction of each kilometer would cost about 60 million dollars.

TransPod estimates that the FluxJet will reduce traffic on the highway between Calgary and Edmonton by a third and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. carbon dioxide at 636,000 tons per year.

The Canadian company’s future plans include turning the FluxJet into a means of transport with a very high frequency of service, similar to the subway. In principle, those responsible speak of a capsule leaving the station every 80 seconds.
