The controversial “peace plan” for Ukraine that Elon Musk presents on Twitter

Tesla CEO Elon Musk sparked a controversy on Twitter by laying out a “peace” plan for the war in Ukraine.

The billionaire CEO sent a series of tweets to his millions of followers on Monday about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, prompting a harsh reaction from Ukrainian pundits and officials, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a presidential adviser, and Ukraine’s ambassador to Ukraine. Germany, Andrij Melnyk, among others.

Musk offered four proposals for “peace between Ukraine and Russia” in a tweet: formally recognizing the Crimean peninsula as Russian territory (Russia illegally annexed the area from Ukraine in 2014), ensuring a constant supply of water to Crimea, committing Ukraine to remain neutral and not join NATO and have the United Nations oversee another round of referendums to join Russia in several regions of eastern Ukraine, which will allow Russia to outbid the regions if the vote passes.

Ukraine’s reaction was not long in coming. President Zelensky responded by posting his own poll on Twitter asking his followers if they preferred an Elon Musk who supports Ukraine…or Russia.

Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the Ukrainian president’s chief of staff, responded that there was already “a better peace plan” that included the liberation of the territory, including Crimea.

Andrij Melnyk, Ukraine’s top diplomat in Germany, didn’t mince words.

The Bloomberg agency recalled that since the first days of the war, Musk has provided Starlink antennas to Ukraine, a network that has proven to be crucial for supporting infrastructure in Ukraine and counteracting disinformation from Russia.

The uproar comes as a Ukrainian counteroffensive gathers pace in the south, after its forces recaptured towns in the north and east from Russian occupation. Ukraine is under increasing pressure to recapture territory before winter sets in, and newly mobilized Russian troops make progress more difficult and costly.

US Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, a Republican not seeking re-election, was succinct. “Pretty much the worst idea I’ve ever read,” he wrote on Twitter.
