A Model 3 now costs 3,000 euros more than four months ago
Musk blames the current situation on inflation and hopes to lower prices if the economy improves
Elon Musk believes that the prices of Tesla cars have reached “embarrassing levels”, but regrets that the current inflation and supply crisis leave them no other alternative.
Tesla has raised the price of its vehicles repeatedly this year. A Model 3 Right now it costs 3,000 euros more than four months ago, in any of its versions.
The situation is such that the price of Model S and the Model X have disappeared from the official website, where the brand tells its customers that “prices will be defined as delivery approaches”.
Elon Musk has recognized that the current situation is not pleasant.
“We’ve raised our prices several times. To be frank, they’re at embarrassing levels. But we’ve also had a lot of challenges in the supply chain and production, and the inflation is crazy.”
Automotive News has collected these statements from Musk in the presentation of the economic results of the second quarter, in which Tesla has manufactured 258,580 cars.
This figure represents some 50,000 fewer vehicles than in the first quarter of this year, largely due to the temporary closure of the Shanghai gigafactory due to the covid-19 pandemic.
In the second quarter, the firm entered 14,602 million dollars, less than in the first –16,861 million–, although 43% more than in the year-on-year comparison.
From Tesla they assure that they have already recovered and that June was “the month with the highest production in the entire history” of the company.
In any case, Musk has pointed out that the evolution of Tesla’s prices will largely depend on the global economy.
“I think inflation will come down at the end of the year. This is not a promise, but I hope that when the time comes we can lower our prices a bit.”
Musk has already said on several occasions that Tesla’s challenge is to expand its production to be able to respond to demand. In the third quarter he hopes to do so with the recovery of the Shanghai gigafactory and the growth of the Berlin one, which already assembles 1,000 Model Y units per week.
