Meta presents Sphere, an artificial intelligence model to verify information on Wikipedia

The program will check the veracity of each of the footnotes of the articles published in the largest free encyclopedia in the world.

Concerned about the veracity of the news circulating on it, Meta, Mark Zuckerberg’s company, presented a new tool called Sphere that seeks to combat the publication of fake news on the social network or at least detect it.

To start testing it, Meta works with Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia with more than 6.5 million entries.

Although Wikipedia has a team of editors who verify the information, given the monthly volume of new posts (about 17,000) there are many entries that are not supervised by a human being.

What Sphere, an artificial intelligence model, will do is verify each of the notes that appear at the bottom of the page of the entries, to make sure that the information “matches” what the source page says. In case the verification fails, it will place a label with the words “verification failed” so that users know that this information may not be 100% accurate.

“Today we announce the first model capable of automatically verifying hundreds of thousands of citations at the same time” they explained on their social networks. “As a source of knowledge for our model, we created Sphere, a retrieval engine made up of 134 million public web pages, an order of magnitude larger and significantly more complex than ever before used for this type of research.”

Although the tool for now will only be used to corroborate the information published on Wikipedia, it gives clues about the path that social networks could follow to try to stop the spread of erroneous information that can cause severe damage to society.

In addition to helping Meta “perfect” its artificial intelligence model, the measure helps to clean up the image of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg by showing them concerned about combating one of the great evils of communication in our times: misinformation.
