Mark Zuckerberg has lost more than half of his fortune in 2022 | D.W. | 20.09.2022

He is not the only billionaire who sees his wallet thin, so to speak, but he is the one who has suffered the most in 2022 with the ups and downs of the business world. We are talking about the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, who this year has lost no less than 70.2 billion dollars (more than the GDP of Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras combined), in what for many experts is nothing more than a demonstration of what Lost that is Meta, the new name of Facebook, in its search for new directions.

Zuckerberg, who in September 2021 became among the three wealthiest human beings in the world, only behind Jeff Bezos (Amazon) and Bill Gates thanks to his enviable 142,000 million dollars, today has an estimated fortune of 55,300 million the US currency (at the beginning of 2022 it had 125 billion). With those savings, he is just 20th on the Bloomberg billionaires list, his worst in eight years.

His fall began shortly after almost reaching the top, and with Facebook’s change of identity to Meta and its commitment to the metaverse, things have only gotten worse. Users on the social network stopped growing for the first time in 2022 and the company’s shares plunged. And since Zuckerberg has 350 million of those shares, his funds were severely depleted. There was a session in which his personal wealth lost 31,000 million dollars.

Compared to its competitors, the worst is Meta Platforms, Facebook’s stock name, which is down 57 percent. Only Netflix has lost more value this 2022 (60 percent). Currently, the list of the richest in the world is headed by Elon Musk, the director of Tesla, who has a net worth of 256 billion dollars. Behind comes Jeff Bezos (150 billion) and third was the Indian Gautam Adani, founder of a port multinational, who has 147 billion.

Meta closed this Tuesday with a capitalization of 454 billion dollars, its worst performance since March 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic began. Until a year ago, Zuckerberg’s company had exceeded a trillion dollars in its stock market valuation. But its sharp decline can be seen from the following figures: since September 13, 2021, Meta has lost 618 billion dollars, the equivalent of Belgium’s GDP, according to the World Bank.
