Los Angeles (AFP) – Described as the most expensive series in history, the prequel to “The Lord of the Rings” was presented worldwide on Monday in Los Angeles in a luxurious premiere with Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, whose audiovisual platform will broadcast the production.

The long-awaited “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will be released on September 2 on Amazon Prime with a budget of 1,000 million dollars but, according to its producers, the cost is a “bargain”.

Television production seems to have been a personal obsession of Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of the e-commerce giant that has also become a major audiovisual platform.

Set in the universe of JRR Tolkien’s books, thousands of years before the events of the famous film trilogy, the series must take place over five seasons of ten chapters each.

Bezos joined the cast of actors and directors at the premiere at California’s Culver Studios on Monday night, where the first two episodes were screened before a light show performed by dozens of illuminated drones.

Executive producer Lindsey Weber called the $1 billion cost a “very flashy headline that people like to talk about”, but promised viewers “will see that the money is on the screen”.

Speaking to AFP on the red carpet, Weber said the budget is due to “starting up five seasons.”

“If you look at what it costs to make a blockbuster movie, we’re a bargain by comparison,” he added.

“The Rings of Power” is set 4,000 years before the story of the original trilogy and books, in a fictional Second Age of Middle-earth sketched in less detail in Tolkien’s creations.

The production has a wide cast of actors, not well known to the international audience.

Morfydd Clark and Robert Aramayo play younger versions of the elves Galadriel and Elrond, characters already familiar to fans of the films.

“It’s an epic adventure story, with universal themes, and a true labor of love. We’ve all worked so hard on it and I just hope people enjoy it,” Aramayo said at Monday’s premiere.

“They’ve built a city, with a dock and boats floating on it. It’s amazing and very, very incredible to get to act on some of these sets,” he added.
