The reports say that the idea of including the reels of Instagram on Facebook was not going to be enough to compete with TikTok. Now, as reported by The Verge, some Meta executives are closely following the growth of the video app and have recently agreed, along with Mark Zuckerberg himself, to reconfigure the section of feed.
An internal company memo was revealed in late April. In it, the executive in charge of Facebook within Meta, Tom Alison, detailed the plan: prioritize posts from accounts people follow. In this way, the social network feed will start recommending posts no matter where they come from.
Messenger and Facebook are reunited
After years since they were separated, another of the changes that Goal would have already decided is to merge Facebook and Messenger again, simply to mimic the messaging functionality included in TikTok.
“The risk for us is that we dismiss this as something that is not valuable to people as a form of social communication and connection, and we do not evolve,” Alison reportedly mentioned in her memo.
Everything indicates that Facebook is thinking of including a key feature in its algorithm, something that both Alison and Zuckerberg himself already call “discovery engine” and that, as its name suggests, it will be focused on content from creatives and influencers with many followers.

Alison would have recently mentioned the lack of vision they had in Meta to see TikTok as a threat. “I think what we didn’t fully see before was how social that format could be,” she revealed to the aforementioned portal.
For now, what could happen is that the main Facebook tab will become a combination of reels and stories, after posts that your “discovery engine” would recommend, with content from both Facebook and Instagram. It seems that the era of news on Facebook is coming to an end, at least in the long-known format.
