After several announcements and expectations, the American company Tesla is about to show the world one of its most modern and technological innovations: creating your first humanoid robotknown as Optimuswhich will use technologies of Artificial intelligence (AI). the company leader, Elon Musk was in charge of revealing the news and provided more details about it.
Through a video call with the British journalist John Micklethwait made for the World Economic Forum that took place this Tuesday in Doha, Qatar, the billionaire showed how eager he is for the project and confirmed the release date. “I hope we have an interesting prototype to show people. We have a very talented team at Tesla that I work closely with to have a humanoid robot prototype ready for September 30”assured.
After the announcement, he emphasized the characteristics of the robot and explained that It will have a height of 1.72 meters and a weight close to 57 kilos. Furthermore, it is expected to be able to carry a load of 21 kilograms. Also, you will have 40 electromechanical actuators distributed in his humanoid body, with legs, arms and hands. It will also be integrated by other elements from the company’s vehicles: it will have autopilot cameras in his head and a mainframe computer inside the torso that will work with Tesla’s navigation software.
On the other hand, Musk clarified that there are no inconveniences regarding the handling that he will carry out, so It does not pose a danger to humans. In fact, last year, in an interview given to businessman and journalist Matthias Döpfner from the Tesla factory in Fremont, United States, he had already explained this: “Optimus is for general purposes, a kind of droid employee. Their initial task is repetitive, boring or dangerous jobs. Basically jobs that people don’t want to do.”
In any case, when asked if it will form part of the daily life of families -for example, when doing housework-, Musk claimed that this is a possibility and said it will be a “general purpose humanoid”. And it went further. Discussing future innovations, he touched on the likelihood that one day people will be able to download their brain functions to an Optimus device. “We might download things that we think make us unique. Of course, if you’re not in that body anymore, that’s going to make a difference, but as far as preserving our memories and our personality, I think we could do it.” detailed.
In another section of the interview, the billionaire cleared doubts and gave his opinion on the robot’s bipedal design and the controversy that arose around it. “Humanity designed the world to interact with a bipedal humanoid with 2 arms and 10 fingers. So if you want a robot to adapt to space and be able to do things that humans can do, it should be about the same size, and it should have the same shape and capabilities.”
Prior to the release of Optimus, Musk is expected to reveal more news regarding this project, that -undoubtedly- could mark a milestone in the history of Tesla.
