Tesla’s exclusive border crossing connects Laredo with the Mexican city of Colombia, Mexico.

Billionaire Elon Musk has struck a deal with the Mexican state of Nuevo León, which borders Texas, that will reserve a lane at a border crossing exclusively for Tesla suppliers. Bloomberg News Reports.

That special lane for border controls is located on the Colombia Solidarity Bridge on Texas State Highway 255, which connects Colombia, Mexico, with the border city of Laredo. The development arrives the same week Musk told media and wall street that Telsa’s auto plant near Austin is about to ramp up production.

“It was a simple incentive,” Iván Rivas, Minister of the Economy of Nuevo León, told Bloomberg. “What we want is a crossing that is much faster and more efficient. And maybe in the future there will be a lane for other companies like there is for Tesla.”

However, it is unclear whether the stimulus cited by Rivas was a cash payment from Musk’s electric vehicle company or simply a revival of economic activity for the northern Mexican state.

Still, Rivas told Bloomberg that he was not personally negotiating the deal and declined to comment specifically on the negotiations with Tesla.

While Tesla suppliers now have fast transit to Mexico, suppliers traveling north will still have to go through US customs along with other commercial freight vehicles, according to reports.

“I have consulted with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Laredo trade operations management, and apart from the Free and Secure Trade (FAST) program and dedicated lane for FAST participants, and normal freight routes north, that’s all that’s available for commercial purposes. trucks,” Rick Pauza, CBP press officer. told Gizmodo.

Pauza also clarified that there is also no dedicated northbound lane to the US from Mexico for Tesla passenger vehicles.

The Mexican Corporation for the Development of the Nuevo León Border Zone, the ministry responsible for Tesla’s fastlane, was not immediately available for comment.
