Unexpected reunion! tom hank helped the Cleveland Guardians open their annual baseball season with a special guest.
the Save Mr. Banks star, 65, was tasked with throwing the ceremonial first pitch at the Friday, April 15 baseball game shortly before the Guardians faced the San Francisco Giants. There Hanks had emotional support at Wilson, the volleyball he played with in the 2000s Castaway.
In the film, Hanks played Chuck Noland, a FedEx executive who finds himself stranded on a desert island. His only source of companionship is in a volleyball player, affectionately nicknamed Wilson. The white ball notably had a red handprint with a smiley face engraved on the front. During Friday’s game, the letter “C” was painted next to the print honoring the Guardians’ residence. (The Giants ended up winning the game 4-1.)
“There’s Wilson,” CBS Sports broadcasters explained via commentary after the ball started rolling away from Hanks, who was preparing to pitch the baseball. “Well, it’s windy today! [He’s] always the consummate actor. … Here it is again! Wilson has his own mind [or] maybe it’s remote controlled.
Although it’s been more than 20 years since Hanks and Wilson became best friends on screen, the California native fondly recalls his time on set.
“We only had daring adventures when we were making this movie,” Hanks recalled during an appearance on “The Bill Simmons Podcast” in November 2021, calling Castaway one of his favorite movies he did. “I mean we were in the middle of the ocean just – you know – trying to take pictures. We were in Fiji twice. … There were only adventures every day, every night.
He added: “[One day] the sun hadn’t yet risen in the east, and I woke up wearing nothing but a Speedo and a T-shirt. I’ll make myself a cup of coffee. The house would be quiet, everyone would be in bed. The stars were out. Moon was out. The sky wasn’t even blue yet in the east, and I made myself a cup of coffee and then strolled down the gravel road to the pier. And then I was swimming to the special fishing boat… I was getting along with the pilot, the mate and one of the crew guys. And we were leaving, and for 50 minutes, the sun was rising behind us in the open sea, and we were heading towards the island of Monuriki, where we turned.
Hanks – who was married to the actress Rita Wilson since April 1988 – eventually won the 2001 Golden Globe trophy for his starring role in Castaway.
