The “Home Improvement” alum’s wisecrack quickly sparked controversy, with many of Allen’s critics slamming it in the responses.

A number of Twitter users accused the comedian of being “disrespectful” to the current president while others called the joke “unfunny” and “lame”.

Online detractors also claimed the ‘Toy Story’ star was “out of place” and “washed up”.

“I think the funniest thing Tim Allen has done in the past 20 years is assume he’s still relevant,” one reviewer tweeted.

A few Twitter users claimed that Allen was replaced by Buzz Lightyear in the latest installment of the hit “Toy Story” franchise due to comments like the tweet he posted on Monday.

“And that’s why, kids, Tim Allen is no longer the voice of Buzz Lightyear,” one social media user wrote in part.

Although Allen voiced the iconic animated character in the previous four “Toy Story” films, he was replaced by Chris Evans in the 2022 film “Lightyear.”

The casting change was criticized by Allen’s fans and many of his friends in the industry.

‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ alum Patricia Heaton blasted the move, writing on Twitter, “I’ve seen the Buzz Lightyear trailer and all I can say is Disney / Pixar made a huge mistake by not casting my buddy Tim Allen in the role he created, the role that is rightfully his.

“Tim IS Buzz! Why would they completely castrate this iconic and beloved character?”

Allen’s longtime “Toy Story” co-star Tom Hanks told CinemaBlend that he “didn’t understand” Allen’s character redesign.

For his part, the ‘Last Man Standing’ actor said he decided to “stay out” of Pixar’s prequel because it “had nothing to do” with his portrayal of Buzz Lightyear.

Meanwhile, some critics of Allen’s last tweet referenced his 1978 arrest for drug trafficking. Allen spent nearly two and a half years in federal prison after being found with more than a pound of cocaine at Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport in Michigan.

He avoided a potential life sentence after striking a deal in which he provided the names of other drug dealers, according to Time magazine.

Allen opened up about his arrest and time in prison during a 2021 interview on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast.

“I was an eff-up,” he admitted. He went on to explain that he started drinking alcohol at a young age and his drug addiction increased dramatically after his father died in a car accident.

After being released from prison, Allen said he was committed to straightening out his life. He has been sober for more than two decades.

A number of Allen fans came to his defense after the uproar that followed his Tweet. Several Twitter users pointed out that the joke was quite innocuous.

“Really?…Twitter trying to cancel sitcom dad Tim Allen for telling a dad joke?…sweet as butter,” one user tweeted.

The ‘The Santa Clause’ star has yet to publicly comment on the controversy on Twitter.
