Tom Felton has given an interview on the podcast Happy Sad Confusedon the occasion of the launch of his new autobiographical book, Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard.

Felton tells how he got the role of Draco Malfoy at that first audition for The Philosopher’s Stonewhich began the saga of films after the success of the books written by Rowling.

The year was 2001, and director Chris Columbus placed about 20 children in a large room. Each of them wore a microphonein order to see how they related to each other… keeping their role or not.

Felton was the most intelligent of all, because, despite being only a child, kept his arrogant and obnoxious role at all times.

That’s when the lovely Emma Watson, who would eventually get the part of Hermione, approached Felton and he asked about the device they were carrying. The answer was anthological.

”So, I knew exactly what was going on. And this little girl with brushed hair came up to me and said, ‘What’s that?’ I looked at her very arrogantly and said, ‘It’s a microphone, you idiot. What do you think it is?”.

Obviously Felton’s reaction was not the result of chance or bad humor. I knew that Draco was a repellent, arrogant and haughty boyso he decided to answer Emma’s question like this.

This reaction was vital for Columbus to bet on the actor in harry potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. In the end Draco would end up being one of the key characters in the sagaas hated as loved by fans.

”Turns out I saw that girl two months later and her name was Emma Watson.”, without a doubt a statement of great sincerity and that is ironic at the same time. Nobody expected that both actors would maintain such a close relationship after that unfortunate meeting.
