The Witcher: this petition calls for the return of Henry Cavill to the Netflix series, but not only

A few days ago, fans of fantasy and serivores were stunned by the news: Henry Cavill give up his role as Geralt of Rivia in the series The Witcher on netflix. Since then, the pill has been far from over, as evidenced by this petition which hits online.

An average adaptation for a cult fantasy work

If they are much less popular than The Lord of the Rings of Tolkien or that The Iron Throne by George RR Martin, the novels The Witcherby Andrzej Sapkowski, remain very popular. This is obviously due to the talent of the Polish author, but also (and above all?) to the video games developed by the CD Projekt studio. The third part, soberly titled The Witcher 3literally exploded the popularity of the franchise with the general public.

Inevitably, the streaming platforms could only take advantage of the openness, and it was Netflix who took the lead, launching the series in 2019 The Witcher with Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. Far from being perfect, the first two seasons still managed to create a solid fanbase, in large part thanks to the masterful interpretation of the most geeky of Hollywood actors.

The recent announcement of his departure from the series after season 3 was therefore extremely badly received and now, it’s Netflix who bears the brunt of it through a petition signed nearly 40,000 times at the time of this writing.

The return of Henry Cavill and the departure of the screenwriters claimed

At the end of October, Henry Cavill admittedly announced that he was leaving the series The Witcher, but remember thathe had also announced shortly before his return as Superman in the DCEU. Overloaded schedule, choice to turn to the highest bidder, disagreement with the direction taken by the series… The reasons for the departure of the actor are not officially known, but the fans have nothing to do with it: for them, only the streaming platform and the screenwriters are in question. This is why the petition posted on Change.org, which calls for the return of Cavill as Geralt, also calls for the replacement of the writers of the series. in order not to repeat the disaster that was, for many, season 8 of Game Of Thrones.

We have already suffered from the disaster that was the end of Game of Thrones. NETFLIX, don’t repeat the exact same mistake of relying on writers and showrunners who believe themselves superior to the true creator (Andrzej Sapkowski, editor’s note) of the stories that make them successful.

Besides threatening to stop watching The Witcher from season 4, or even to unsubscribe from Netflix, the signatories of the petition recall that the author of the books had dubbed Henry Cavill and his work, evoking “a great professional. As Viggo Mortensen gave his face to Aragorn, Henry Cavill gave his face to Geralt and so should be forever.” Very nice words which, let’s be honest, have little chance of reversing Netflix or Henry Cavill on their respective decisions. From now on, it is rather to be hoped that his replacement, Liam Hemsworth, is up to the task of the task ahead.
