The representation of the mafia has countless precedents in productions, both on the big screen and on the small one. It is clear that, over the years, the inventions of new stories are presented as a great challenge, and thinking in aspects seems to be one of the answers.
The approach to collateral actors represents the task of Graham Moore with The mafia tailor (TheOutfit, 2022), since the focus is on the worker leonard burling (mark rylance) who, among his clients who request bespoke suits, is the Chicago mob. In this case, the wealth of the production goes through the interaction of the protagonist precisely with organized crime groups.
The tailor’s voiceover explains the steps of his work, but it is not in vain or simply to give you context. Is that in his new job for Moore everything has its cause, and the dialogues – interesting under the script of the director and Johnathan McCLain– create the suspense is growing with the passing of the minutes. After a brief presentation of the characters, 90% of the actions take place in a single night, where the organization commanded by Roy Boyle (Simon Russell Beale) breaks into the premises and puts the protagonist in trouble.
However, the presentation is not exhibited in an uncluttered manner, but just like the instances of suspense, everything is built little by little, from the appearances of the performers without much preamble and which are reinforced in that long night. The role of richie (Dylan O’Brien) within the family or the ambitions of Francis (Johnny Flynn) are thrown stealthily, except for the past tense of Burlingwho is the only one who has flashbacks of his London past. In narrative aspects, we see everything from his perspective, and he manages the threads -consciously to unconsciously- of everything that happens around him, through the role of rylance and his demure interpretation –by another route to his also cautious but terrifying personification in the recent in to the bone (Bones and All, 2022) -.
If to one the name of Moore sounds familiar to him, their quick relationship – and for which he won the award oscar– is due to the riddle code (The Imitation Game, 2014) and where we find its greatest coincidences in the technical aspects. A muted color palette supported by dim lighting allows for a confined environment, somewhat more intimate for the adventures of alan turing since all the actions happen on the premises.
Perhaps that is why the resolution of the conflict, which seems to be resolute, draws attention, twists that abuse the cabal and some action sequences that emerge to justify the environment in which the characters operate. However, it is not a condition to impoverish your consumption, just a detail that resonates but is still a simple brand.
The proposal that came to HBO Max It is more than interesting with some novel aspects, which is reinforced by their interpretations and by lovers of the genre. To put on the suit and hit play.
