After their plane crashes in the middle of the mountains, Alex (Kate Winslet) and Ben (Idris Elba), who don’t know each other at all, must join forces to survive in extreme conditions. Hany Abu-Assad’s film is adapted from eponymous novel by Charles Martin published in 2010. The latter, a graduate in journalism and communication, has written more than fifteen novels.

The interest of The Mountain Between Usis that the film was shot in real conditions. Indeed, Hany Abu-Assad’s team set up its cameras in the bitter cold of the Canadian Rockies, more than 3,350 meters above sea level. For several months, the production chose the breathtaking landscapes of the picturesque community of Invermere, in southeastern British Columbia. Some areas of the shoot were only accessible by helicopter. The 20th Century Fox has therefore made available three Bell helicopters specially designed and equipped for extreme cold.

Despite these extreme and costly filming conditions, production was halted twiceas revealed by the press notes quoted by Allocinated. Sure enough, filming for the movie was put on hiatus so Kate Winslet could attend a memorial service for Alan Rickman, died on January 14, 2016. The actress was a close friend of the late comedian and therefore demanded a few days break so that she could pay her respects. Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman had toured together twice, in Reason and Feelings in 1995 and in The King’s Gardens in 2015. The filming of The Mountain Between Us was also discontinued in December 2016 so the team could enjoy the holiday season.

Despite this strong desire to create striking realism, The Mountain Between Us did not receive very rave reviews. On the box office side, it’s not much better since the feature film did not even bring in double its budget with only 62.8 million dollars in worldwide revenue, for an estimated budget of 35 million.
