Comedian Ben Affleck, who will reprise his role as Batman for ‘The Flash’ feature film, promises Andy Muschietti’s film will simply set aside the best Dark Knight sequences in the entire DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
The Batfleck will return
In 2016, Batman changed face once again. After Christopher Nolan’s excellent trilogy with Christian Bale as the Dark Knight, Warner decides to create its DC Extended Universe (DCEU) to oppose the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio begins its ascent with Man of Steel (2013), quickly followed by the massive crossover Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), which offered fans a new actor in the skin of the Batman: Ben Affleck. Heavily criticized by fans at first, Ben Affleck eventually came naturally to the role and then returned three times: briefly in Suicide Squad, then in both versions of Justice League.
Lately, Ben Affleck seemed to have had enough of the vigilante role. Indeed, initially, he himself was to direct the next Batman solo film. But the actor / director abandoned the project, which then fell into the hands of Matt Reeves. The latter then embarked on the production of The Batman with Robert Pattinson. We thought Ben Affleck was done with the Batman, until Warner announces its return to The Flash.
Batman’s best scenes will be in The Flash
Expected for November 2, 2022, The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti, will compete with the recent Spider-Man : No Way Home. Indeed, this time it’s Flash, still played by Ezra Miller, who will roam the multiverse, and meet variants of our favorite heroes. Thus, we know for example that Michael Keaton, years after the two Tim Burton films, will also be present as Bruce Wayne. The opportunity for spectators to see two Batmen confront each other.
In a recent interview with The Herald Sun, Ben Affleck spoke about his appearances in The Flash. The comedian said that the sequences he shot with Andy Muschietti are totally mind-blowing and might just be the best Batman-related scenes yet in the DCEU. Ben Affleck then made it clear that he hoped the final cut would retain all of those footage:
Maybe my favorite scenes in terms of Batman and how I interpreted it, are in the Flash movie… I hope they keep all of what we did. Because I think it’s great and really interesting, different, but not in a way that’s incongruous. Who knows ? Maybe they’ll decide it doesn’t work, but when I went to do it it was really fun and really satisfying and encouraging and I was like, “Wow, I think I finally got it”.
So it took half a decade for Ben Affleck to understand the essence of Batman. But we are happy to see that the actor made peace with his character. Hard to know she will be Batman’s fate in The Flash. It is whispered more and more that the feature film could be used to close the door of the Snyderverse, and thus conclude the arcs of Batman, even of Superman.
