In “The Blues Brothers”, Carrie Fisher is in pursuit of the brothers played by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. During the filming, the latter saved the life of the actress, before asking her to marry.
The Blues Brothers : two brothers on a mission for God
With The Blues Brothersreleased in 1980, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd put on the suits, glasses and black hats of two characters born in the Saturday Night Live. When Jake (John Belushi) is released from prison after serving time for armed robbery, he is reunited with his brother Elwood (Dan Aykroyd). The duo learns that the Catholic orphanage in Chicago in which they grew up is about to be razed.
To repay the establishment’s debts and prevent its disappearance, the Blues brothers embark on a divine mission. They reform their musical group and go on tour in order to legally pocket 5000 dollars. During the journey, the adventures multiply. Between two musical interludes with great artists, including Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, the duo must notably face Nazis as well as a mysterious woman (Carrie Fisher) who pursues them, armed with a bazooka.
James Brown, Cab Calloway, John Candy, Henry Gibson and John Lee Hooker complete the cast of this monument of comedy signed John Landis (The Werewolf of London) and filled with cult songs like Gimme Some Lovin’ and Everybody Needs Somebody to Love.
The heroic and romantic gesture of Dan Aykroyd
In the film, the woman with the bazooka is none other than Jake’s ex-fiancée. During the filming, it is not for John Belushi that Carrie Fisher has a weakness but for her partner Dan Aykroyd. The Blues Brothers mark by the way the beginning of an idyll between the star of Star Wars and the one at Ghostbusters.
During her visit to Dragon Con in 2011, a convention organized for science fiction fans, the interpreter of Princess Leia reveals that her ex-boyfriend saved her life on set, as reported CNN and the website DNA Info. The actress then says:
I almost choked on vegetables I shouldn’t have eaten: Brussels sprouts. So he had to do the Heimlich maneuver on me. He saved my life, and then he asked me to marry him. And I was like, ‘Wow, what if this happened to me again? Maybe I should marry her.
The tender tribute to Carrie Fisher
Despite their engagement, Carrie Fisher and Dan Aykroyd do not marry. After their relationship, the actress said “yes” to musician Paul Simon. However, the two actors remain on good terms.
Following the announcement of the death of Carrie Fisher in 2016, Dan Aykroyd returns to her a particularly touching tribute. In a text published by Empirethe actor writes:
I grew up as an ordinary Catholic child from a family in Hull, Quebec. So you can imagine what an honor it was for me to meet this completely extraordinary woman who became a great friend.
It also evokes their meeting in the Saturday Night Live as well as the instant complicity between Carrie Fisher and John Belushi, before adding:
When we shot The Blues Brothers, Carrie and I fell in love and she moved in with me. I bought Carrie a ring with a sapphire and a little later she gave me an oil painting by Donald Roller Wilson of a monkey in a blue dress next to a tiny floating pencil. I kept it for years, until it started scaring my kids.
Dan Aykroyd concludes with tenderness:
Carrie was not superficial, we had a great time. (…) She was also in love with Paul Simon. She married him but I hope she kept my ring.
