‘Super Mario Bros’: everything we know about the animated adaptation of the Nintendo video game hero voiced by Chris Pratt

Yahoo! mamma mia! Thirty years have passed since ‘Super Mario Bros’ tried to take its first step into the cinema with the live action film starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, and since then Nintendo has not dared to let its characters jump from the video game to the cinema beyond ‘Pokemon’.

Now, Illumination, the creators of ‘The Minions’ or ‘Pet’, have gotten into the very complicated job of making an animated film based on a plumber who rescues princesses with the help of his brother as he takes down an army of turtles, mushrooms, ghosts and fish. Start the world 1-1. You are ready?

The history

Not much is known yet about the story that ‘Super Mario Bros’ will adapt, but seeing the first trailer we know that it will have to do with Bowser getting the power stars from different worlds and Mario, who has just arrived in the Mushroom Kingdom, fighting him and his evil minions with the help of Toad and Luigi.

The cast

One of the most controversial points of ‘Super Mario Bros’ has been the choice of its cast. The character has an established voice, that of Charles Martinet, and seeing him with the raspy voice of Chris Pratt (‘Parks and recreation’, ‘Guardians of the galaxy’) is quite a shock. Especially since it was announced that he would put on a different tone of voice and the one we’ve been able to see is… well, his tone of voice without any modification.

Mario

Jack Black is Bowser, a role that suits him perfectly and for the one who will end up singing, to the delight of his fans (which, deep down, are practically all of us). Anya-Taylor Joy (‘Lady’s Gambit’) will be Peach, Charlie Day (‘It’s always sunny in Philadelphia’) will be Luigi and Keegan Michael-Key, half of ‘Key & Peele’ and dubbing actor in ‘The Lion King’ ‘, ‘Angry birds’ or ‘Toy Story 4’, will be Toad, which, according to Key himself, will also improvise a song.

Also making appearances will be Seth Rogen (as an unexpected Donkey Kong), Fred Armisen (Cranky Kong) and Mr. Charles Martinet, in a role that probably will not go beyond the cameo. The cast is top notch, and you just have to cross your fingers so that in Spain do not put Mario Vaquerizo and Melendi in his place.

Bowser

The shoot and the crew

Although Nintendo looks with fear at Hollywood after the 1993 disaster, it is known that in 2014 there were attempts to make a film with Sony in the hands of the much loved and hated Avi Aradand in the leaked emails of that year it was learned that Genndy Tartakovsky was on the list of possible directors for the “Mario universe” they intended to create. In the end, the project fell apart.

Shortly after, while setting up the incredible Super Nintendo World at Universal StudiosShigeru Miyamoto, creator of the character, met Chris Meledandri, founder of Illumination, and they started collaborating creating a storyknowing that if it didn’t work out, they could call it quits without any pressure. As we now know, the idea bore fruit.

Toad

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenicthe creators of ‘Teen Titans Go!’, would be the directors, with work on the script by Matthew Fogel (‘Minions: the origin of Gru’, ‘The LEGO Movie 2’). In the soundtrack we will have, for the peace of mind of the most gamers, Koji Kondo, author of the soundtrack for the Mario and Zelda video games. Along with him, Brian Tyler, who will give the epic touch that he gave to the scores of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Iron Man 3’ or ‘The Mercenaries’.

Release date

‘Super Mario Bros’ will be released on March 31 in Spain, although it will not arrive in the United States until April 7. Surprisingly, Japan will not arrive until April 28, a month after the rest of the world. A staggered release to always be in the conversation or a little mess?
